Once you follow that trail and understand what took place in Jefferson County, there's really no room left for illusions. We live in a gangster state, and our days of laughing at other countries are over. It's our turn to get laughed at. In Birmingham, lots of people have gone to jail for the crime: More than 20 local officials and businessmen have been convicted of corruption in federal court. Last October, right around the time that Lisa Pack went back to work at reduced hours, Birmingham's mayor was convicted of fraud and money-laundering for taking bribes funneled to him by Wall Street bankers everything from Rolex watches to Ferragamo suits to cash. Since it is clear they are acting with government collusion/blessing, should we just hasten the collapse of the US empire, and start a new with a clean slate? I mean at this point, there is not much hope left, is there? The corruption is so thoroughly ingrained everywhere. It is like a house riddled throughout with termites. Extermination is not possible; the house must be torn down and rebuilt from scratch, no?

Without a fundamental shift in American culture, that won't solve anything. The political and economic status quo is as it is for a reason, and that reason lies in our common culture. If we want the system to change, we must ourselves change.
