Go to The Marmot's Hole blog and look for the fellow from Washington State who contributes quite a few comments.

Also, there's the Gangnam-Gu Labor Office. They'd likely have all sorts of leads. Ask your wife to give 'em a ring.

Brendan Carr is not in Daegu.

And being a corporate lawyer, he's not that receptive towards English teachers.

OP: For many of us Westerners, the first reaction to a dispute in Korea is "I need a lawyer!" The thing is that in Korea, lawyers are quite expensive. Plus, you just may not need one after all. If you're comfortable with giving some details about the situation, you'll probably get some good advice from experienced posters about which government agency to approach and how to go about prevailing there, all without legal expense.

My life is still great, for sure better than yours judging by the way you post.

The problem is with a gyopo, and that person is the one that jumped so quick to get a lawyer so as to not pay. I have tried to sit down and talk with this person reasonably, but I know that the gyopo cant pay, so she is doing anything and everything to not pay my 4k she owes me. This is all extra job money, but 4k is not small cash. She needs to be taught a lesson. And I dont want to get a lawyer, and I dont want to do it this way, but I have piles of evidence that will force her to pay. I am getting a lawyer so I dont have to deal with it myself anymore.

Nothing will force her to pay. If she doesn't want to pay you, she'll just ignore the court's order. Then you will have to return to court and request the court seize all her assets so the court can then dispose of them and disburse the money from auction. Of course, she'll have plenty of advance notice to disguise her assets. That she will do by transferring all real property to a relative. Any money she has in a bank, she'll just transfer that money to another relative or, better yet, "pay for services rendered" to a relative's company.

Since this seems to be about an unlawful withholding of wages, you must start with the Labor Board. Apparently, the courts won't even listen to you if you don't begin there as "You should try to work it out amicably at the Labor Board."

Now, if this is wages for work outside of your normal employment, you really do need to have all the paperwork in order. If anything's amiss, then you're the one in the wrong as it'll be considered working without legal permission. If that's the case--and I'm not saying it is; I'm just warning you of the possibility--then you have no recourse at all.

4,000 dollars is a lot of money but it will disappear rapidly if you're paying a lawyer at the last going rate I heard a few years ago of approximately 300 dollars an hour. Another thing to consider is that, as you say, since she's already lawyered up, she knows the system better than you and will spring a claim against you for some egregious offense. Even if it's not true, defending yourself from that charge will also eat up the money.

I have anticipated most of these things. The labor board has already ruled in my favor. I just got a lawyer, and yes I will loose half of my money, but half is better than zero.

Friend, you're going to lose all your money, not half.
