|
|
I have a Shinhan bank account (super convenient to my workplace), but the only card they gave me was an ATM card, which is quite inconvenient when I want to make larger purchases, or simply do not have cash on me. Is there anyway I can get a check card (via Visa) on an E2 visa? There have been several times where I've had to use my American card in an emergency. It's frustrating...
(I'm sure this has been posted before but my search function doesn't work! If you have any hints on how to alleviate this problem let me know.) |

Have you asked them for a check card? If that doesn't work, get someone from your workplace to accompany you to the bank and tell them you want one. I'm on an E2. I have one from Shinhan. So do a few other E2 holders that I know. |

When did you get your card? The Shinhan attached to my building is giving my teacher manager a hard time about it, but I think there's some lack of clarity in our communication. I will prevail! |

You should definitely be able to get one. It will most likely be a BC card or some other kind that only works in Korea though. I asked a few times for one with a Visa logo and kept getting turned down. |

Shinhan Bank has opened a "Global Center" (I cannot remember the exact name) at the Seoul Finance Center in Gwanghwamun. The office is for foreigners. It might be worth a phone call or a visit. |

Actually samsung will do it. Do a search of this forum for samsung credit card and you should find the number. They'll send an english speaker out to get you signed up. |

I have a nonghyup check card, I specifically asked for one when I opened a new account with them. Although it doesn't have a laser/visa/maesto logo on it they assured me it will work in homeplus etc etc. I have yet to try it out yet but I will when I go in sometime to do a small amount of shopping but I will be sure to have the cash on me too just in case.
On a quirky note, what the hell is with the banks charging 500won per transaction that occurs outside of bank business hours?? that's crazy!!! |

I don't know about Shinhan, but both Nong Hyup and KEB offer VISA cheque cards that work within Korea. You should be able to get one. |

Hana gives out check cards, and KEB will even give you a check card that you can use at ATMs outside of Korea (it's called a Global card) although you have to go to the right branch to get one. |

I also have a Nonghyup check card. I have an F4, but all my E2 friends got one as well. I use it all the time because I don't like using cash (I use cash in emergencies such as when places don't accept cards). It makes things rather convenient. And I am also kind of meh about the 500 won thing. I thought it was only for weekends, but apparently it's for non-business hours. Although I have withdrawn money late at night without being charged the 500 won fee. I dunno. |

even KB Star gives a check card to foreigners.
Find a new Shinhan branch that will give it to you |

Please people. I don't know why anyone banks with someone other than KEB. Ever since switching over to KEB I've been 100% happy. Switch to KEB today!
(and no, I don't work for them)

Anyone try to get a second check card with KEB? I wanted a second one to use for shopping (didn't want to put all my money on one account accessible by debit card) but all they could give me with my second account was a cash card that can't be used for debit transactions. |
