The point is that as another nation gets stronger and stronger (military and technologically) more and more money is going to have to be diverted to the defense budget until it is no longer basic or minimal.

Rather, I think that the actions of other nations just change what basic and minimal mean in the context of defense. Yes, it's an unfortunate truth that nations like China or Russia could force other nations to spend more on their militaries, both in terms of man-power and in terms of money. And although I think it's a shame that occurs, it's reality.

I guess where we disagree is the meaning of "basic" or "minimal".

All I can do is explain my usage of the terms. A defense force insufficient to defend you is no longer minimal in my estimation, but rather inadequate. A minimal defense is the minimum required to defend your nation against its likely foes. When you begin sending troops abroad to interfere with other nations, you're beyond that. Yes, this does mean the actions of other countries could cause a shift in your own necessary expenditures.

This from a local Sask. columnist, middle-of-the-road politically.

Second rate academics teaching in backwater Universities have to stir up this kind of s##t to compensate for the fact that they are second rate academics teaching in backwater Universities.

It is also revealing to note that the Conway fellow cited in the article Mosley included in his post was tossed out of Royal Roads Military College in Victoria. Conway's website indicates that he "had experience as an officer cadet at Royal Roads military college." It doesn't say "he graduated from..." but rather "...he had experience as..." suggesting that Conway is just a poor little ponce who got drummed out of the army and ran into the arms of the Academy where poor little ponces are celebrated.

(nice to see you hangin' round the forum Mosley Wink )

Cheers, Carlyles.

The story has gone off the radar a bit but it's lingering in Sask.(and nationwide). It reminds me a bit of the late Vietnam War period(albeit on a far smaller scale) where the "Hard Hats" were pitted against the SDS types. Not that I...ahem...*cough*...actually remember those great days...construction workers beating up snot-nosed stu..., er, never mind....
