Hi Everyone,

I have recently completed a combined weekend and online TEFL course. I really want to teach in Seoul but have been told by one agent that getting a job there will be highly unlikely as I have no experience and dont have an American accent. He has found me jobs in other places mainly rural locations which are not really ideal. Should I accept a position or be persistent about getting a job in Seoul?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Luke

I think the question boils down to: "how much time are you willing to wait?"

I am also looking for a job in Seoul, and have been for about a month now. I have a few leads so far, but nothing solid. I am confident, from the posts here and other places, that I will achieve my goal. There are always jobs opening up. Other posters here have mentioned they had to wait a while to find what they want, but eventually got where they wanted to go (usually Seoul).

Most recruiters will try to get their least desirable positions filled first, and I would say this one agent you have talked to is not averse to "stretching the truth" a bit when it comes to your prospects.

I recommend contacting as many recruiters as you can -- one is bound to come through for you. Be firm, and don't just accept any position -- let them know specifically what you are looking for.

Again, be patient. I think it will pay off in the long run. Better to persist for a couple months to get your position in Seoul than to get impatient and wind up hating life in the sticks.

If you are looking for a PS position then he is probably correct.
Try for one of the close in satellite cities.

IF you are willing to settle for a hagwan then spam a bunch of recruiters with your resume and cover letter.

There is no shortage of hagwan positions in Seoul (unless your accent is REALLY thick).

Seongnam isn't Seoul..it's a city directly to the south about an hour away. Anything Gyeonggi-do is not Seoul (it's the surronding province).

FWIW, Avalon is one of the largest chains of hagwons in Korea so they probably won't screw you over too much. Just ask to talk to a foreign teacher already at the school.

Careful turning this position down. Avalon offered me a position once but I didn't like the location. I politely declined. I then asked if they had anything else. No response. Emailed them again, no response. I'm pretty sure they black listed me after turning down one gig! They haven't responded to my emails since.

not to do with avalon but i am finding this out the hard way. when i started looking for jobs i sent my resume out to loads of recruiters and inevitably about half responded with the jobs they couldn't get rid of. i was always very curteous, very polite, no thanks but keep me in mind for something i do want etc.
i see the same three recruiters advertising jobs that would be perfect for me day after day after day. no matter how many times i email them, absolutely no reply back, i've been binned off for sure!
