The Korean English teacher from the neighbouring High School came to me the other day asking me for help. He has to interview middle school students at the POE in order to select some to go to camp abroad this summer.

He seemed pretty stumped as to what questions he should ask. However, having never interviewed any kids to go to camp myself, I was wondering if anybody on this board had any experience about what questions he should ask?

I'm wondering if there is any consensus out there about what is appropriate, so that I don't mistakenly provide him with dud questions.

To be honest I think it is his job to think up the questions, but he looked so damn lost sitting there talking about it I couldn't say no for some reason.

Be careful, he may be lining you up to do the interviews. I got caught like this last year, as the K teacher didn't want to have to refuse the kids access to the camp. They really wanted to go, but there weren't enough places.

What's your name?
What school do you go to?
What grade are you in?
Who's in your family?
Why do you want to go to this camp?

Bingo.

I recently had to interview students (mostly grades one and two) here for a study abroad trip to china (why in english I don't know). I ended up asking them these questions:

How are you today? (easy question to make them relax)
What was your favorite Elementary school subject? Why?
What subject did you hate in Elementary school? Why?
How many people are in your family?

A little off the beaten path but they've worked for me in my interviews:

If you were an animal, which one would you be and why?
Name one non-family role model that you look up to and please explain why.

I'd choose all of the posters suggestions because they're all good questions.

Take care.
