I'm thinking of building a midrange desktop. I want to use it for photo editing and playing some games (STALKER, Fallout 3, maybe Metro 2033). Here's what I had in mind:

VGA: ATI 5770 - 210,000
Ram: 4Gigs - 140,000
HD: 500GMB - 50,000
CPU: i3 - 140,000
Mobo: ?? - 130,000
Case: ?? - 20,000
PSU: ?? - 50,000

I'd like to keep my cost below 600,000 if possible. I'm looking to cut costs so I'd like to hear from you tech wizards out there.

More info: I have a 24-inch LCD (1920x1080) that I connect to my dying laptop right now. I have some 2.5 external HDD's which I could use but they're filling up fast so I should get a cheap desktop one. Also, I'm pretty sure I don't need an optical drive (never really use them).

So.. opinions? Do I really need to go with an i3 or will a 2 Duo be about the same (and cheaper?) I'd like to stick with ATI, but can I get away with anything below the 5770 to play old-ish games on a screen like mine?

Thanks boys (and any girls).

Why not go AMD?

You could probably get a better processor/mobo combo for less going with AMD instead of Intel.

Yeah, I'd consider AMD. What's a good CPU/Mobo combo?

Are you definitely wanting to build the thing yourself?

Mid-range, off-the-peg systems in Yongsan are pretty hard to beat for value. I haven't been there for a while, but I'd say 600,000 would get you a good all-round PC as long as you're not too picky about brand-name components.......and I don't think you really need to be except maybe for the PSU.....I'd spend 80,000 + on a reputable brand name PSU.

An HD5700 series card is pretty good value. For gaming, I'd guess an i3 and a good C2D would be on a par.

I went to Yongsan today but they were closing soon so I got things priced. Here's what I was quoted.

CPU: Intel i3 530 - 131,000
MB: Emtek H55 - 88,000
RAM: 2x2GB - 124,000
VGA: XFX HD5770 1GB Rextech - 205,000
HDD: 500GB - 56,000
ODD: LG multi-DVD - 28,000
PSU: Heroichi 500W Rapter - 55,000
Case: 20,000
and 10,000 for assembly.
(Total: 717,000)

From what I can tell, the prices are pretty much on par with what's listed on Danawa except maybe for the CPU.

I was initially aiming for under 650,000 and though I wouldn't need a DVD drive and a HDD - I have a few 2.5's laying around at home. However my hard drives are constantly filling up and a DVD drive can be useful at times.
How else can I penny pinch and save some coin? I was looking at core 2 duo's but they're priced the same as the i3's, or someone pointed out that going AMD would save some money but I don't know a good CPU-MOBO combo. Also, I was thinking at picking up a used DVD drive instead of buying new. Thoughts, ideas? I want to go back tomorrow and get this thing done.

The only way I can see you cutting costs there would be to run with only 2GB of RAM and/or go for a cheaper graphics card. 5750 maybe.
