|
|
My previous hagwon was pretty bad, I won't get into all the details here but it was a lot of the usual crap - late pay, dubious deductions, overworking us to the extreme, etc. 3 Korean teachers quit while I was there. Halfway through my contract I was let go and replaced with a female teacher (I am male), because some parents requested a female. Even though I asked numerous times for a release letter they never gave me one. At the time I didn't realize how important it was, I figured in the future I could just explain the situation to other schools and they could call and confirm if necessary.
Problem is now I am looking for other jobs, every employer wants to know why I didn't finish my contract and wants to contact the school to check about me. My old director is badmouthing me, one recruiter basically confirmed it, the others I just never hear from again, so I can assume what is going on. I guess I was a bad teacher because I demanded to be paid what I was owed and wouldn't simply roll over and accept their lies. I never missed a day, was always on time, the kids loved me, the parents loved me, never had any major problems or complaints that I recall.
What the heck am I supposed to do?? This is the only place I've worked at that can give me a reference. What would happen if I just left it off my resume. I assume it would show up when they apply for the visa but would it matter at that point? I could have old coworkers vouch for me but I doubt that would carry nearly as much weight as the hagwon director.
Somebody help please!! I have been looking for work for weeks now and I feel like I'm banging against a brick wall. |

Take it off your resume.
Or
1. Have a Korean friend call your old hogwon acting as a recruiter.
2. Have said friend record the conversation.
3. Go to former hogwon and tell them you are suing for defamation of character if they don't stop bad mouthing you.
4. Have another Korean friend call and pretend to be a recruiter, see if your evil plan worked. |

Some questions to give more accurate answers.
1) You didn't get an LOR - correct?
2) WAS you visa in fact canceled? Did you get an exit order?
3) are you in Korea, your home country, or some 3rd country?
Now for a few quick remarks and answers:
You CAN leave the hakwon off of your resume. As long as your previous visa was canceled no one (other than immigration) will know unless you tell them. Nobody sees the visa pages in your passport other than the consulate, immigration and passport control.
IF your visa was canceled (and you obtained an exit order) you can just start from scratch with a new set of documents.
If you visa was NOT properly canceled you may have to wait until the previous visa period has expired.
If you are still in Korea, have been unemployed for more than 2 weeks and have not gone to immigration yet you may be in an overstay position and have even more problems. |

Curious; if the parents loved you why did the parents ask that you be repaced with a female teacher? |

^This.
Don't worry so much about leaving it off the resume. It's obviously not going to help you.
So is your visa still valid? If so you may need to do your own visa run and turn in your ARC when you leave.
If your back home, you need to be getting affairs such as transcripts and criminal checks done. |

It was actually a group of new parents, meaning several new students for the school, but they wanted a female teacher for their kids. At the time it was me and one other male teacher, so I was replaced. I'm not certain that this was even legal, but my experience there was bad enough that it did not bother me to leave.
Unsurprisingly I was lied to about why I was being laid off and I didn't learn the truth until the new students showed up the day my female replacement started. The director acted like it was a big surprise but I figured out what had actually happened from the Korean teachers.

At this point my previous visa has expired and I am in the USA. So I guess I will just leave it off. I didn't really have problems getting a job the first time with no experience, I guess it will be alright now. I was just worried they would figure it out and it would look bad. Thanks for the help. |

Just leave the school off your resume.
A word of warning: you may have to 'lose' your passport and get a new one (that doesn't show your visa).
Some K employers demand to see your passport (my last EPIK school did - and like an idiot, I gave it to them). There's no privacy here - and the admin staff were commenting for weeks on all the stamps in my passport.
Good luck. |

That's when you copy the first page of your passport and give that to them. That's it. 'Your' passport is not your property, so you can't give it to a 3rd party unless they are a government official. |
