At least 20 people are now known to have died in clashes between Thai troops and opposition supporters in Bangkok, and more than 800 were hurt.
The worst violence came when soldiers and police made an unsuccessful attempt to retake an area held by opposition supporters on Saturday evening.
They fired tear gas and rubber bullets while protesters hurled petrol bombs, in the deadliest violence in 18 years.
A government spokesman denied reports that live rounds had also been fired.
"There were no live bullets fired at protesters," Panitan Wattanayagorn said on national TV, AFP agency reported.
At least four soldiers were among the dead on Saturday.

Poor Thailand. This really isn't going to help their economy. Apparently 40 different embassies have advised their citizens against travelling there. Hope nobody has any trips planned for the foreseeable... |

I bet if you flew direct to somewhere like Krabi or Phuket, and didn't stop in Bangkok, it'd be okay.
But better safe than sorry. |

They would though.
but its probably just a matter of avoiding one or two streets in the capital. Where no tourists go anyway.
I actually joined in one of the protests against Thaksin. Had the full headband and everything. That was I think 3 years ago. |

Against Thaskin? Why? Ok,I know the guy is a bit of a thug, and I am sure he is dirty, but I also think some of his policies were useful and lowered the gap of inequality in the country. |

Mostly just for fun. To feel part of the country and the atmosphere somehow..accompanying a Thai friend at the time.
However from what very little i know... he was corrupt and greedy. |

I was there. My friend and I partied the night before away with the red shirts at Ratchaprasong (music and dancing in the streets). The next day I walked up Sukhumvit and saw the riot police squared off against a whole bunch of red shirts, but most were just sitting down. People were bringing them food and water etc. and raising a general ruckus (blowing horns, clapping). It was tense, but peaceful. The violent clashes took place elsewhere though, across town near Khaosan road.
Abhisit is a filthy crook and deserves to be lynched for this. He was never voted into power (in fact his party suffered two crushing electoral defeats before he was placed into power by the courts). He has no mandate and now has blood on his hands, which is why he's hunched away like a coward in a military base and refusing to call elections (because he would suffer a massive defeat yet again). The red shirts have caused disruptions, but not as bad as the yellow shirts. They have the moral authority, there's a whole lot of them, and they're not giving up. If there's any more bloodshed in BKK, the north of the country is liable to explode into revolution, and some are even talking about a civil war. At any rate it's no joke. If bombs start going off around town, I'll be packing my bags and heading out.
As for Thaksin, yeah he was corrupt, but at least he generally adhered to the constitution and was voted in. Most red shirts aren't even fighting for Thaksin, they just want Abhisit to get the hell out. They want a stake in the country. |
