So basically my girlfriend and I are going to be living separately from now on. Initially we were intending to effectuate the clause in our contracts that stated we were each owed a single non-shared apartment, but she managed to find a place to stay for basically free.

But get this... The school wants me to pay them money for the apartment I currently have to make up for the fact that they are providing me a larger apartment than they need to.

I can't count the logical fallacies in this thinking.

I kind of understand their thinking... at my school, couples are given a larger apartment and if both people work at the school, then it's free. However, if only one person works for the school, or if a single person wants a "couple" apartment, then you have to pay for part of it.

But all that is stated in my contract. I don't know what yours says.

Hey, as long as they're not paying for a second apartment, and it's in your contract that that is the apartment you're getting, their loss...

Tell them you changed your minds and will share the apartment as before. Then she doesn't live there anymore and DON'T SAY ANYTHING to the school this time.

Edit: And also, you could say that if they are claiming you owe them money because it's a double apartment instead of a single, make them find a new single for your girlfriend (even if she has a place to say) for free. And then offer that if they decide not to ask you for the extra money, that you guys will not ask for another apartment for her. They can't have it both ways.

Didn't you say in another thread that you didn't want to affect the relationship at your school by asking for separate accom.?

EDIT: Just re-read your post. That's pretty effed up. Unless your ex is asking for money behind your back. He obviously rented a bigger apt, for two people.

weren't you saying the single apartments are more expensive than your double??? Tell them you will move out and go into pne of the singles, they should let you stay in the double and keep quiet!!

or as has been suggested, tell them you and you g.f will take 2 singles.

As per the EPIK contract, you get 400,000 won a month for a rent subsidy. If the apartment is over this amount, you need to pay the difference. As a couple, 800,000 would have been enough. Find out what the apartment costs each month.

I actually work for a hakwon, so the public school contracts aren't relevant, but thanks for the info, anyway.

I spoke with my boss about some of our options, and she was quite cordial (at least about the apartment portion of this issue). I left my meeting with her feeling hopeful about a solution being reached which wouldn't leave me entirely financially responsible for the apartment, although she has a reputation for equivocating. Tomorrow I will talk with my director in a meeting and hopefully we'll be able to work something out. He was extremely unhappy though and made a point to emphasize that the decision was his. I'm trying to be pleasant through all of this and hopefully I can swing something in my favor. It would be a nice turn of events.

I'm pretty good at math, so I think I might show up with an equation that most fairly distributes the financial burden based on what is being paid for by whom at the moment. Or maybe a couple. Equality is relative though.
