does anyone have any interesting club activities to do with 1st grade middle schoolers? i technically have them in an after-school "class" but we all know how that can be. i'm looking for creative ways to have them communicate with me in english, but be doing something other than playing games or working from handouts.
i'm thinking along the lines of "newspaper club," but something not as advanced as that for them. any suggestions? |

What about theater, short film, or something like that? I've found something visual + active works the best. |

Teach them some random sports. I taught my middle schoolers ultimate frisbee last year, they loved it. Half your time is spent teaching vocab, gamesmanship etc, and the other half can be spent playing. Handball, and other odd sports that they're likely not to have played will work best.
Also, since the parents generally want something a little more academic, try the 'Can You Believe It' series. Book 1 worked quite well.
If you want to do something film related, try doing it with shadow puppets, as many kids won't want to be on camera. |

Awesome idea! Print out some puppet templates or have them make their own. Have them write a script. Have them do a monthly school news program. This would be great if I had younger kids! |

I got the idea my 2nd grade textbook. Put 'wayang kulit' into youtube and you'll have a good idea of what I'm thinking of. I saw another one, where the kids had made a storyboard, and filmed their drawings, and narrated. I guess that'll help to get around the shyness too. |
