I'm going to Korea in a few months I hope and I'm a little worried about finding clothing (footwear in particular). I am about 6'5 and 220'ish lbs. I'm pretty big (not overweight) even by North American standards, and size 14 US footwear is probably unheard of in most of Asia.

Finding a bed I fit into just right may also be a challenge.

"Will that size combined with athleticism give one a certain physical authority that is advantageous in any way?"

Don't be so full of yourself Razz (but probably!)

I'm not quite as big, but almost.

Not trying to be arrogant so much as wanting to know the score (although, nothing wrong with a little swagger). I have found that even though I have a friendly demeanor, my size can come across as intimidating in itself, in a way I scarcely think about. I wouldn't be surprised if you had found that to be the case, too. So I wanted to know how to be aware of my size in a Korean context, for better or worse. If it ever helps me carry my way in a situation, that's great, I'm not above that, but I don't want to scare people either.

intimidating how - have 'they' [the frightened] told you as much? if so, why?

Good question. It tends to be reported to me second-hand, and it is generally but not always women (usually dainty women) who report feeling that way.

....so physically intimidating dainty women gives you "big advantages in a lot of contexts, such as the corporate world."

Hrm.

Um some of these posters are coming across as jealous..

In Korea, appearance is everything. Koreans will be intimidated and in awe of your size. You will get preferential treatment because (especially if you're also good-looking) you fit the perfect weigook mold of a man: tall, strong, handsome, confident.

Yes you will have physical authority, but it will mainly be on the surface. It's not like you make many big decisions in a hagwon. Mostly, you'll find Korean co-workers laughing nervously in your presence (as they constantly marvel at your size) and K women scurrying past you in the hallway, eyeballing your muscles. On a happy note, you will get excellent obedience from the students, and probably lots of ....dates.

This thread makes me think about the fact that I've been seeing tall, muscular Korean guys around, more than before. It's nice.

Statement A: Being large and intimidating can be advantageous in the work place.
Statement B: Small women are most often intimidated.

I think I drew a reasonable conclusion from that. Perhaps you should reevaluate the morality of using your size to psychologically dominate people.

Korean males:
* Will want to check out your equipment in the gym/sauna.
* And I would not be shy.

Korean females:
* May be intimidated or attracted. Hard to say. Will vary.
* May be mistaken for Army personnel.
* You would have an exotic novelty value.

Korean children:
* You would look weird in a hagwon situation.
* Chuldren may be scared of you initially, depends on age.
* Once they are used to you, it will be fine.
