Hi

I'm going to NZ at the end of August and will be staying with family in Upper Hutt (outside Wellington). My uncle, who I will be staying with, asked me if I was planning on renting a car. Is it necessary for me to rent a car? I looked into Upper Hutt and it appears there is a subway station there that connects fairly regularly to Wellington. Also is it possible to rent a scooter/ moped? I'd be more inclined to rent a moped over a car. How far is Upper Hutt from Wellington?

I know Upper Hutt is a small residental area but any other info about it would be great!

I have never lived in upperhutt, but if is like anywhere else in NZ you need a car if you want to do anything. As for the train

All of these and more are from the last couple of months.

Upperhutt people have a bit of a reputation for being hippies and bogans.

If you are going for any length of time (i.e. a month or more, look at buying a cheap jap import should be able to get one for a grand.

Hi

I am from this neck of the woods!!! I am from Lower Hutt

New Zealand has no subways!!! But we do have trains

Depending on what part of Upper Hutt your Uncle lives in for example:
Heretaunga, Silverstream, Pinehaven or Upper Hutt station the train runs every 15 minutes to Wellington....but if you want to travel after peak times then the train is every half hour....(bear in mind I haven't used the trains in a few years but I think it will still be similar) If you go from Upper Hutt station to Wellington it takes about 45 minutes on the train

The Wellington region has introduced a more reliable bus system...there is the Airport Express that is Orange that goes to Wellington airport and out to the Hutt Valley via Queensgate (one of the biggest malls in the Wellington region) they run about every 15 minutes

Rental cars are widely available in NZ but are quite expensive...mopeds are not that common and could be hard to come by

but check out tradeandexchange.co.nz (they have everything on this website)

also check out stuff.co.nz

If you want any more info just PM me...

There is also the Stagecoach flyer another bus that goes around the Hutt Valley (Upper Hutt and Lower Hutt to Wellington) too, that is quite frequent...
you can get a "fare card" and just recharge on the bus as you go
