My friend wants me to come visit her in Hawaii over the summer.

I looked on kayak.com for flights from Seoul and Busan to Honolulu in August, and both times the cheapest round-trip was around $1300.

That seems pretty damn pricey considering I got a roundtrip ticket from Seoul to L.A. - around twice the distance - for little over half that.

Are there other websites I should be looking on? And is there another airport besides Honolulu? Or is that really the best price?

I wouldn`t bother with the foreign sites. The likes of Expedia etc usually come out far more expensive than the local sites. Try using the Korean sites like....you need to know some very basic hangul.

www.whypaymore.co.kr
www.072.com
www.onlinetour.co.kr

I was going to go to Hawaii last month for 799,000 won (JAL) through one of the above sites but for a change of plan.

Sometimes even the agents have good deals. Sohotravel, Shoestring travel and Kangsan Travel are usually ok with prices and fairly good with replies.

Those site usually list fares minus taxes which can be significantly more.

Fares have gone up this year, also.

Can't hurt to look around, but you'll probably need a Korean to help you purchase through whypaymore. I've heard they are the cheapest.

Remember summer time is peak travel time...so you will not always get a good deal on airfares....but if you book as early as possible you will be able to secure a good deal on an airfare...and as another poster said if you use a korean website:

072.com
whypaymore.co.kr
onlinetour.co.kr
nextour.co.kr

they have competitive prices....

I went to Hawaii and most international flights that originate outside of continental US will fly into Honolulu...
I went for Chuseok (september) 2007 and paid 799 000 won round trip via Tokyo on JAL (that was a horrendous 6 hour stop over though...)

I have found that for other destinations that if you book 6 months or more in advance you can get dirt cheap airfares...I got an airfare to the UK with Turkish for 840 000 won (round trip with a brief transit in Istanbul) and this was for Christmas

Think about planning a stop over there at the end of your contract when your employer is buying your ticket home.

Zippy did this last December and it cost him the $60 difference in tickets, which he reimbursed his school for after he showed him their cost to fly him directly home and the price of one with a ten day layover in Hawaii.
