Hi everyone,
I am really eager to teach in Korea, but I can only commit for the summer. I already have a career teaching in the US, and I don't want to give that up.

The thing is, I had 3 interviews with summer camps, but the more I think about it, the more I know that's not what I want. I'd like to experience teaching AND living in Korea - not locked away on top of a mountain with kids for 4 weeks.

I have looked at other post re: summer jobs, but my question is this: should I come out to Korea and just cold-call hagwons to work for 8 weeks? Does this sound like a feasible option? I have a MA and 4 years teaching experience in AP History. I am a gyopo so I am eligible for a F4 visa (although it seems kinda complicated to get - may be a different post later on).

If you have any advice, please share - I'd really appreciate it. Who knows? If I actually get out there, there's a drink on me!

Peace out.

If you come on an F4 you will definitely be able to find hagwon work for the summer.

There are plenty of camps that are not camps as well...in fact very few of them are actually on a mountain or anywhere that even loosely resembles a "camp"...they are mostly on university campuses and are more like school than camp.

Just curious, how did you get 3 interviews for summer camps already? Where did you find the jobs?

I can't take a leave of absense because my position is pretty specialized - they would have to hire a new person. Plus, the state of NJ is in a financial crisis, and I don't want to give the administration a reason to dismiss me.

Paige, I have to admit - I did a lot of research. One was on Dave's for TLBU. Another was posted on HiTeacher, and a third one was a summer intensive. I can't remember where I saw it.

Carol, where do you teach in NJ? I have 2 family members that work in Special Education and are worried about what Christie is going to pull.

hey carol how long after you applied to TLBU did they contact you for the interview. I consider myself a highly qualified candidate (4 years experience, 80% done with a masters degree). However, I applied there a few weeks ago and they never got back to me Sad

anybody else on here get an interview with them?

It is super high alert here. I'm in Sussex County, and our school is losing $250,000 worth of state funding. Apparently, Christie has decided that teachers are Public Enemy #1 and is aggressively going after our pensions and benefits. He has suggested a one-year salary freeze, as well as reopening our contracts.

Maybe his teachers were not very nice to him when he was in school.

Wish us luck. We'll need it.

I sent in my application about 10 days before the interview, but I also sent a follow-up e-mail a week later. As for the qualifications, I taught college courses, as well as 4 years of AP courses in high school. I'm a doctoral student (on leave - that infernal dissertation refuses to write itself!), and I also taught American constitutional law at a summer academic program run by Johns Hopkinsfor several years. I think the last was one of the things they really liked - they seemed to really emphasize the difference between teaching at school and camp.

I hope this helps - in the meantime, drop them a line to follow up. The man who interviewed me said there were a lot of applicants and the process of going through would take a few weeks.

Good luck!
