I really hate shopping for electronics in Korea. That feeling of 1000 vendors all selling the exact same thing. Maybe +/-5,000 Won. That feeling of potentially getting ripped off. That feeling of walking forever and not finding the *exact* thing you were looking for.
Don't get me wrong; the technomarts are nice when you *want* to haggle, but when that's all there is, it's a really depressing way to shop. I would kill for ONE place that's nicely organized and layed out, with decent all-around prices and KNOWLEDGEABLE staff.
edit: not to say that Best Buy is perfect, or even that that style of store is the best possible thing--look at Circuit City. Such a crap-hole. That said, I just want a place where, even if it's just mediocre you know you're not getting ripped off, and that there's effort from the management if not the staff to be up-to-date.

+ 1,000,000.......
I miss a wide range of stuff well organized on shelves. With prices on them!!
From low-end to high-end.
And knowledgeable, up-to-date staff who can recognize an enthusiast wants performance and cutting-edge components.
I go to Yongsan less than once a year.......each time I go I'm more and more disheartened. Not a pleasurable shopping experience.
Maybe I just need to find the PC enthusiast scene there.....perhaps in a small corner of Yongsan there are guys who move with the times and understand high-performance electronics. |

Fry's was always a pleasure to shop at if you knew exactly what you wanted or did some research before hand. The selection was awesome and the deals were pretty cool sometimes, especially on classic movie DVDs or random appliances.
However the sales staff there, at least at the stores I went to, were among some of the most uninformed employees I've ever encountered. I can't even count how many times I'd ask a question only to find out later the answer was totally wrong or contradicted what another employee told me.
I do find Technomart, EMart, HomePlus fun, but I also wish they'd have more unified pricing and stock some products. Two years ago when I simply wanted to buy an Xbox 360 it was absurd how many different prices I was given for a simple 20gig system. When I finally tried to buy one I was informed they didn't have any in stock.
Same thing happened this January when I tried to buy a PS3. Maybe it was a lost in translation with my terrible Korean but trying to actually walk out with a PS3 in hand from HomePlus, EMart and Lottemart all resulted in a "no have" and the universal X across the chest.
And from a gaming POV it drives me nuts when I see 10 copies of some no-name Xbox 360 game from 2006 and not a single copy of God of War 3 at HomePlus. |

I miss neither. Both of them sold subpar products.
I miss Newegg the most. Anything that I needed that couldn't wait 2 days for shipping I would go to Walmart. |

If NewEgg shipped internationally, I would be the happiest little boy in Korea. |

Having something like Newegg in Korea would be a dream.....if it had the low prices and 2 day service like Newegg. I'd be ordering my head off.
It took 7 days for my HD5850 to arrive after ordering from a Korean online vendor in January. It was roughly $90 more expensive than the Newegg price. In the meantime, the guy called my wife twice to ask would I take another product! Not anything like the brand or model I wanted.....
.......horrible service. |

I miss close-out sales. It seems places here would rather hang on to outdated tech for months at the original price rather than offer a discount and start selling the new models on time.
Anecdote: Was helping a friend by a new camera. Checked danawa. It was available. Went to Yongsan. Was told that nobody in Yongsan carried that model because it was an Olympus, and Koreans don't like Olympus cameras. Was offered last year's Fuji which was "just as good." (It wasn't.)
We repeated this little song and dance about 5 times before we found a shop willing to sell us what we were looking for. (Before anyone chimes in about how they may actually have been telling the truth, I've had the exact same experience when buying new Korean products.) |

hahahaha I was thinking the same thing!!!
I have no idea what Frys is, but man, I HATE Best Buy! The prices are so inflated there. You can find anything they sell on the internet for cheaper if you don't mind waiting a couple days. But they do have the stuff, I will give the guy that. |

When haggling in Korea, you're haggling for the vendor simply not to rip you off. |

HiMart reminds me of Best Buy. Similar selection of products, the staff have similar levels of knowledge (ie. almost none), but HiMart workers dress and look way better. And both stores never have exactly what I want (higher-quality or higher-end stuff, or specialized parts). |

Himart is really a poor man's Best Buy. Himart simply doesn't have the selection any Best Buy would have back home. Also, the prices at BEst Buy are quite good / fair, Himart's prices are seriously jacked up. |

Danawa.com
everything is well-organized and many online shopping sites are represented so you can find the best price.
Things may not be as cheap or varied in Korea, but there are options. |

1. You really must not shop around much if you think Bestbuy has good prices.
2. Himart must have some ridiculously high prices if you think BB is any good. |
