Oh boy! First movies banned. Now music banned. What next? Smiling? What are the moderate Islamic groups saying about this? They're maybe the only people who can stop it. Guns or dialogue with the West will be ineffective I believe.

No firm, effective governance = the craziest and most violent getting their way. All too often, people born and raised in governed, orderly societies forget why we adopted those governments in the first place.

Muslims can't stop this, only an effective national government can. Local government exists in Somalia, but local government can't hope to challenge these militias.

Lyrics taken from the 8 Miles to Mecca official soundtrack Shocked

the song is purely political though!!!! Sad

Seems school bells are now banned as well. Because they sound like church bells.

Wahabism is really a pain. Let the sufis play thier music.

It's they're culture and who are we to Judge. Some of you are so ethnocentric.

That's just it: it's not their culture. If it was their culture, then men with guns wouldn't have to threaten them to force their compliance. If they just plain didn't want to listen to music for cultural reasons, I doubt anyone here would consider it more than slightly quirky. That clearly isn't the case.

yeah, but why not let the Somali population be the judge? How about a public referendum.

Do you like being bullied and whipped by the Somali Islamists?

Do you want your daughters to go to school?

Do you want your daughters to be able to go outside and play with the rest of the children?

Do you want the right to enjoy the things that western people enjoy, music, movies?

Allah Akbar!

Sufism is predominantly the majority Islamic belief in Somalia, and is not generally as extreme as sunnism or shiitism.

In fact sufisim seems to adopt a more musical poetic culture, though since the 1980s the Saudis have been exporting thier culture (wahabism). They apparently did so for two reasons.

One better to have the extremists propogating thier views outside of the SA and two because they had the money to do so.

The increased monetary missionary work/support for wahabism in many cultures around the world has increased a more extreme form of Islam in nations that were not predominantly extremist in ideology.

At least thats my understanding from my readings. There are a few others on Daves such as Bucheon who have a greater understanding of the intricacies and can explain it better.

Never mind Western people. We could say Indians. The Pakistanis like those Bollywood movies and bhangra music. I imagine that other Islamists do to.

I was just thinking how Somalia was already a misearble place to begin with because of poverty. Not, to not have music on the radio. Talk about living without any comforts.

Just a thought I had now:

K'naan, a native of Somalia, who has gained a lot of popularity in the West particularly with his song "waving flag" being the official World Cup song this year, has amazing music that happens to also be very political against the leadership (or lack thereof) in Somalia.

Is it a coincidence that they have now outlawed music in Somalia?

This song rocks, and is an example of K'naan's messages:

You'll have an easier time reasoning that all music is non-political than you will that not all music is political.

Music is a great form of protest. It is also a great form of worship to the glory of God. But the Somalian whatever-they-ares are more interested in politics than theology.
