|

I recently got married and received my F2 visa. I am planning to go back home to the United States to visit for a couple weeks in September. Can I get my pension refunded? If so, how can I go about doing it?
Thanks in advance |

Same as anyone else.
ARC, one-way ticket home, passport and bank information.

Thanks! I am only going on a trip with my wife to the US for a couple weeks. Is there a way to get the refund back with a round trip ticket? |

If you were on an E2 that was expiring = yes.
Since you are on an F2 that WON'T be expiring = not sure.
In theory, NO but this is Korea.
Suggestion: get your best deal on a return ticket for your vacation as planned.
Buy a ONE WAY REFUNDABLE ticket to anywhere to appease the NPS clerk.
KAL only charges 30k won as the refund service charge. Apply for your pension then refund the ticket. |

So buy a one-way refundable ticket to the US and go to the NPS office and show that to them, then refund it? Will I be able to refund it for the cash back, or will I get airline credit?
Will they ask me when/if I plan to return to Korea? Will they know if I lie and say no (I am thinking that the pension refund takes a couple weeks, and I'll only be gone a couple weeks, then starting work again. Will they see my pension information getting new activity before I get my refund)?
I think you might be on to something here. Thanks a lot for your help! |

(1) The ticket doesn't have to be to the states; just out of Korea.
If you get it direct from KAL and use your credit card it will be credited back in about 3-4 days. Their website works well or the KAL ticket office.
If you get it direct from KAL and use cash (at their ticket office) it will take 30 days for a cash refund.
If you use a travel agent, I don't know.
(2) Probably not. If they do, tell them you have no plan to return.
They WILL verify with your employer that there are no more contributions to come and then close your pension account.
This can complicate your life a bit.
When you return your boss will have to go through the paperwork to re-open it again before contributions can be made.
It may trigger a close on your medical plan (NHIC) as well.

This sounds shady.. I wouldn't risk doing it. It may cause you a lot of problems when you return. A friend of mine left Korea, went back to the US, and came back here 2 years later. Had problems with her pension (may have been her hakwon boss, not sure). I wouldn't risk it! |
