So this looks to me like an amazing contract for me and my lover. It's a couples position with a 2-bed apartment - the space is key! Our only hesitation is that a) we were told not to jump on the first thing that comes along; and b) the location - we kind of have our hearts set on Busan, and yong-in looks like a super-boring suburban nightmare, something like Kanata out of Ottawa, or Brampton out of Toronto.
Thoughts? advice? |

First, you should be posting this in the sticky thread for contracts.
The hours seem quite long, the overtime is way too low for 2.3million. You should have at least 22,000won for overtime. Ask about summer and winter camps. You might have to do mandatory overtime. 16k is less than your hourly wage.
45 minute classes suck bad.
You won't make 2.3 if you live in Busan. Many new teachers barely make 2 million in Busan.
Yongin isn't too bad, just depends on how close you are to the subway or the main bus route.
For a first job, it doesn't suck, but I would do some more research. |

My first offer was a kindy, too.
I didn't bite and I don't recommend that you do either. |

Unless you are full of jungle juice they will wear you out before you hit the afternoon classes of elementary.
My school has a kindergarten teacher and 2 assistants just for one class of 12 students.
I used to have to deal with that just by myself. We seriously get used in certain situations.
PLus once you hit the older kids, you may be too tired to teach them well and unless you really like kids it might not be the best choice. |

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. On the advice of the posters here, I turned down a similar contract.
I thought to myself, "Hey, the hours are long but the pay is good. And I can totally handle the kids! I drink Red Bull and it gave me wings!"
But I realized that mentallity would probably last me about a month before I was wishing for a more normal schedule. There are better deals out there, trust me. My recruiter just found two more. |

Well, I certainly don't hate children - and the shared accommodation is because they want EITHER two people separately, or a couple. And we're a couple. The 7am to 10pm thing does intimidate me, though - does that automatically mean split shifts? Otherwise, that's a 15-hour day in which case we'd be working like 2 days per week. Maybe those are just the hours that the school is open? |

Sorry, we've not even had an interview yet. This is the offer the recruiter presented to us - she's got to contact the school's director and stuff. |

Those hours almost certainly indicate split shifts, usually kindy in the morning and elementary/middle in the afternoon.
Depending on how you like to work, it can be good or bad. If your house is within walking distance of the school, then you could just head back and relax for a few hours before the next shift.
Of course, if you're stuck in a remote location, then being at the school for that amount of time could well drive you insane. |

Just noticed this. Breaks down to 34 teaching hours per week. That's a bit higher than average, meaning more classes per day. |

Say you want to see the contract. If it's 7-10 (they want you to be there for 17 hours) then walk. Get specific hours put into your contract and make sure there's no "I can change you schedule whenever the hell I damn well please" clause.
Kindy isn't about liking kids...it's about loving kids. If you are alright with kids...bail. If you are awesome with them and they love you...give it a try. |
