I'm one of those weird people that is pretty excited at the prospect of living in a pretty run down (but safe) area of town. Thanks for all the tips and advice - I truly appreciate it!

Really? You think 12,000won+ is a good price for a pita covered with sauce?
Personally, being served stale bacon was enough for me to not go back.

If I'm not mistaken, Chimsan Dong is near to Kyunpook University. It's not really close to a subway station but maybe a 5 minute taxi ride from Dong Daegu station, which is a train and subway station. Not TOO far from downtown, but since that's a university area there's quite a bit to do. Close to Daegu airport, Costco. I was supposed to move there but got another job in a different part of the city, but I wuld have been happy to live there.

When are you planning to arrive, Jille? I just got my Visa Registration number. (After a week of nail biting)

My school wants me to arrive on the 30th of April or the 1st of May.

Yes, it's the 19th today and I don't have my plane ticket. Yes, I've been biting my nails. Very Happy But, I've resigned myself to the last-minute process and I'm sure everything will work out in the end!

I went to Daegu a few weeks ago for the Solar Expo. Coming from Seoul, I have to say that I was extremely happy to leave after two nights (one of which was apparently the coldest April night in Daegu on record - very close to freezing). The only thing that interrupts the boredom are the jet fighters making frequent afterburner low passes over the city, and helicopters testing engine performance with mufflers removed. Confused

I never had the impression that Seoul was a quiet city until then Rolling Eyes

For some reason they built the expo centre in an area where there's absolutely nothing to do or see in walking distance. In favour of the city I might say that the food was generally very good (even the seafood - fresh from Daegu beach) and the traffic jams were smaller than in Seoul.

My advice is to wait at least a year before visiting Busan or Seoul, otherwise you never feel comfortable there. Wink

Daegu doesn't have a beach, of course, but the poster might mean from nearby Ulsan or Busan. I still prefer Busan for food for some reason. Things taste fresher to me. Daegu is more conservative and I see so many more restaurants with weird organ dishes.

OP, I don't know if this is good news or bad news, but Korean cities aren't terribly distinctive, and one isn't going to be night and day different from another. Row upon row of convenience mart, hogwan, pharmacy, church, apartment. I like Busan more than Daegu. But I will say that Daegu is easier to get around. Driving is impossible in Busan. And because the country is small, you can still take the train anywhere you like.

I was kidding of course, there's no beach for miles. Just so the seafood there in Daegu was very fresh and delicious, and quite different from what I've had in Seoul so far.

I'd go back for the food until I've found similar places here. Still don't care about the aircraft noise. Also most of Daegu looks like most of Seoul (repeat with any Korean city) most of the time.

One more: I have not been able to spot any of the famous coffee shop franchises, only one Burger King but no McDonalds, no Dunkin', no 7-11, and so on. Lots of Paris Baguette though. I'm sure for the residents there is "the" McDonalds to be found somewhere in the city center, but in Seoul I can find all of this multiple times within a 200m radius at almost any part of the city.

I'm sure there's a movie theatre around somewhere, too. Rolling Eyes

At a motel between a university and a women's hospital (don't remember the names right now). The entire area is made up of motels (some of them themed - nice touch. We stayed at one called Bellagio), restaurants and noraebangs. Pretty much like a tiny Hongdae/Sinchon w/o the foreigners, in fact I liked the place at night but then we were all too drunk to complain anyway. About 20 mins drive to the expo center.

Some part of Daegu is entirely made of motels, I saw a huge one that must have been at least 15 or 20 floors! I couldn't take a closer look but normally in Korea, where there are motels there's good times to be had. So judging by the sheer amount of motels, there may be something about the city that I missed.

Busan would still be my choice if I were denied residence in Seoul. A beach and an ocean view can make up for a lot of things. There's also an international airport there and you're 3 hours from Seoul by KTX, which is practically 3 hours of decent sleep.

I work next to a military airbase in Bundang and we get dozens of helicopters, trainers, fighters and cargo planes each day. So when I complain about the Daegu noise, I have a reference to compare to. Daegu was loud.

I have never ever heard aircraft noise unless I'm out by the airport (where Exco is).

Exco is maybe 5 mins from Costco.

Daegu has an airport, and it's 2 hours KTX to Seoul.

Most expats prefer Seoul and Busan over Daegu. Daegu is pretty conservative. They are building an international school and other stuff up in the FEZ. They are trying to make the city more appealing to foreigner business and investors.
