I agree with you Dan that Seoul (and Korea) is a lot of fun with the 24-hour life going on.. the bars.. and all the rest..

But Mercer's quality of life isn't judged on having fun, 24-hour conveniences, excitement or energy.. instead its based on this:

Quote:
Mercers study is based on detailed assessments and evaluations of 39 key quality of life determinants, grouped in the following categories:

Consumer goods (availability of food/daily consumption items, cars, etc)

Economic environment (currency exchange regulations, banking services, etc)

Housing (housing, household appliances, furniture, maintenance services, etc)

Medical and health considerations (medical supplies and services, infectious diseases, sewage, waste disposal, air pollution, etc)

Natural environment (climate, record of natural disasters)

Political and social environment (political stability, crime, law enforcement, etc)

Public services and transportation (electricity, water, public transport, traffic congestion, etc)

Recreation (restaurants, theatres, cinemas, sports, and leisure etc)

Schools and education (standard and availability of schools etc)

Socio-cultural environment (censorship, limitations on personal freedom, etc)

It has been determined that the "quality of life" in Seoul ranks 90th among 215 worldwide cities. Zurich and Geneva of Switzerland have been selected as the most favorable cities to live in. Baghdad, Iraq sits at the bottom of the rankings.

Seoul scored the same as that of 2003, receiving 81.5, but plunged two spots from 88th to 90th. The reason for Seoul's lower rank is due to the North Korea nuclear problem, pollution, and heavy traffic. In particular, Seouls score of "Sanitation and hygiene condition" remained at 104th due to the terrible pollution.

Yes, I'd love to live in Geneva. It's a wonderful place.

In short, it's quality of life for those who are intending to raise a family or have little time for a night-time social life. :D

If cost of living was a factor, Vancouver would be on top of the heap for sure. I think it should be a consideration for this sort of study. Buy a set of standard groceries and some luxury items like TV's, which can be measured across the globe depending on model and make. Considering New York is the 100 point base, then there's no way any of the Swiss countries would nudge the top 10.

jae.

Lets lay off the Croatian immigrants. Yes, they are the European scourge, but thats another thread altogether.

Vancouver vs. Geneva ...

Ill take Geneva ANY DAY OF THE WEEK. Its just a way, waaaaaaaaay, way cooler city, more beautiful by leaps and bounds than Vancouver. Vancouver, really, without the mountains, is an UGLY city with no architectural marvels at all. Geneva not only has better mountains and more beautiful nature, but the architecture beats any of the cheapo skyscrapers vancouver can offer.

Also, living in Geneva, its just a few hours by train to a number of really cool cities like Lyon, Munich, Lucerne, the French Riviera, a number of awsome skiing places.
If you live in Vancouver, you got Seattle as a place you can visit. Oooooooooohhhh Seattle, thats #456 on my places to visit list, right behind Hicktown, MO.

I've lived in Seoul, Manchester (UK) and Zurich and would place Zuri at the bottom of that list.
But then I don't spend my time sitting around wondering about the past record of natural disasters

Yep, thats pretty much right. This is the list of the world's most boring safest cleanest places with as few chances of terrorist attacks (all U.S. cities were knocked down a few points for that) and natural disasters (there goes Japan and California out of the list).

So basically safe, clean, boring with a lot of services available..

Tokki,

Where did Belgrade fall on the list?

Did it even make it?

Anyway, the fact that you prefer Geneva over Vancouver just proves that Vancouver is better.

The "best" city to live in isn't necessarily the most fun. I lived in Aberdeen, Scotland for 7 years. It's a dull grey city with nothing of outstanding note but has tons of bars and a good nightlife if you know where to go, and I'd a great time there.

If I was going to live in a city, I'd be looking for one with tons of bars and clubs over actual facilities.

So, I suppose the best city in the world is just personal to everyone. I must admit, I can't imagine the heights living in Switzerland, but it's probably a safer bet for comfort than the exciting hellholes.
