I was out for a walk today. When I go for a walk, I don't feel the need to put on a tracksuit or any other silly uniform. I'm just going out for a stroll in my hoody and jeans..
I had an ajeossi walk up from behind me and slowly pass me. He was in his walking uniform. He was staring at me, head turned as he walk ahead of me. He kept the stare. It wasn't one of the "oh wow a foreigner!" or "oh, look, a dirty foreigner!" looks. I gave him an "annyeong haseyo" because I figured it was polite but I figured he might just leave me alone.
He then comes up to me, saying something I can't understand. He first quickly mimicked the way I was walking (I walk with a slight limp, a result of breaking a leg 3 times in childhood) and then demonstrated the 'proper way.' He then continued thought he would adjust my posture by putting his hand on my back and the other on my front to adjust me. Needless to say, I was not pleased. I pulled away and gave an "an-day-yo" calmly. He puffed "ehhh, an-day, an-day" and walked away.
Don't touch me. |

Old people are not in any position to be giving advice about posture to young people.
I also don't like being touched. |

An-Day yo?
You really need to pick up more Korean if you're going to scold them.
You should be saying "man ji ji ma sae yo" You can skip the last 2 if you want to be rude. As for your smoker "gum yeon" (no smoking) or Danbae ha ji ma sae yo Don't cigarette |

I would just do like most Koreans and not say Annyong haseyo to strangers on the street. If someone stares, say Muo bah ee sekkiyah? |

I was trying for the easiest Korean. Most foreigners learn how to say beer, ahstray and that's it.
Teaching foreigners Korean is like teaching kids. Make it simple or they won't remember. |

So your screen name is a bit of a misnomer eh? Id change the name from "curious about Korea" to "arrogantly closed off about Korea"
1) They were simplly trying to be helpful, misguided help to be sure, but help none the less.
2) Your opening comment is so racist and judgmental its not even funny. " I don't feel the need to put on a tracksuit......" well good for you. Thanks for sharing.
3) Neither of these 2 are strictly Korean issues
4) What exacty does a "look a foreigner" or "wow a dirty foreigner" look, look like.
5) You gave him an "anyong aseyo" because you "figured" it was polite. But did you actually WANT to be polite what with the fact that you are apparently judging his stare and his attire.
6) Not saying he should be touching you, but you are dealing with a different culture, a different mindset for older people both is how they are treated, and how they treat others.
You are not very tolerant at all. Just politely move his hands, say aneyo, quen chon ay yo, kamsahamneeda and continue walking.
Its not the end of the world that an ajosshi attempting to assist you ( again misguided) while on your walk. |

Cheers to the previous poster. I don't like being touched but I'm just allowing it when it happens - I'm referring to Americans more than Koreans here. Americans seem very touchy feely. |

Well for one thing I had 4 other points
for a second, could you perhaps elaborate what you were going for as a message when you started your stupid rant about the " I don't feel a need to get dressed in a tracksuit"
if you can explain how it isnt a racist opinion then I will retract it.
At the least it was a judgmental comment that reaked of superiority of your choices over another's |

Because the ajeossi was walking around doing his power-walk in his fancy tracksuit. Should have added that in.
Edit: Wait a minute, I did mention that.
Did you move to Korea last week? I assume you live in Seoul, because of your screen name, but come on, you haven't been stared at (unless you look Korean and blend in)? All of us non-East Asians get stared at, even in Seoul, from time to time. (I'm in Ilsan, where staring isn't frequent., but exists nonetheless). Anybody who has been here more than a week can tell you there's staring, and it comes in different forms.
Go ahead and ask some Koreans if it's ok for older people to touch younger people (strangers); pretty sure it's not.
You shouldn't accuse people of intolerance when you know very little about them.
Did I ever say it was the end of the world? I just continued on my walk. Anyways, your post was kinda funny, thanks. |

Okay perhpas I need to use smaller words.
Let me use your OPENING Line
"I was out for a walk today. When I go for a walk, I don't feel the need to put on a tracksuit or any other silly uniform. I'm just going out for a stroll in my hoody and jeans."
So again, could you point how THAT statement is neither condescending , hinting at your superiority, or racist.
As this was what I asked you to explain.
As for this statement
"Go ahead and ask some Koreans if it's ok for older people to touch younger people (strangers); pretty sure it's not."
This also shows yor lack of knowledge of the culture.
While many Koreans do not like it ( just as you do not) it is none the less something older people do constantly
As for judging you, I wasn't doing that, I took your comments as written and noticed your racist undertones.
If I am the first person to call you on that, well good for me. |

When you accuse someone of racism or similar, you need to explain why it's racist. You haven't. Go ahead. Now's your chance. Have fun. I never mentioned Korea/Koreans once.
You haven't told me how long you've been here. You really don't know the different stares? |

1) I am not accusing you of being racist, you made the statement, you are in Korea, as I said, if it WASN'T racist it was highly judgmental.
As I said, if it WASN't racist then explain what exactly you meant by judging people with that comments, whether culturally or not.
2) I don't get the stares, so knowing what they are is not something I can speak intelligently about.
3) Even if I got them, I wouldn't presume to be ignorant enough to know what a person is thinking as they stare at me. |
