Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knew of any university jobs, in or around Seoul, that are currently hiring English teachers.

I know most unis require a masters or doctorate to teach at them, but I have met or talked to a bunch of people over the years who have worked at them without these requirements.

If you are currently working at one or know of some other unis that are hiring, please private message me or email me at [email protected]

Thanks in advance

I think the ones that don't require MAs are mostly not in or around Seoul and also require you to be recommended by someone who works there. You need connections. There are a lot of people with BAs who want to work at a university. I think without an MA, you would pretty much need good connections, and decent qualifications, like a B.Ed and TESL certificate and experience.

1- Lisa made valid points with regards to the non-MA jobs.

2- The semester has ALREADY started (March) so no jobs are offered now. Jobs for the fall semester start to pop up in May-June.

3- Unless you are already in Korea and have experience, with only a B.A. your chances of landing a University job, much less get an interview, are pretty low.

4- The jobs you would get would be lower tier and most likely tied to the Unigown (university hakwon).

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply.

I have 3 years of teaching experience here in Korea. I have my B.A. and I also have a teaching degree (B.Ed.) as well.

If you are currently working at a university and don't have a masters or doctorate then I would love to hear how you got your job.

Also, if you know of any positions that are hiring now or will be hiring in the next couple months, I would love to hear about them.

Cheers

Does the MA have to be in TEFL/Linguistics? I have an MA in Film Studies with Screenwriting; will that benefit my job applications at all?

I got a uni job without a masters. I do have a BA in two majors one of them happened to be in english and I also had a celta, and a year and a half experience working for a adult hagwon. I didn't have any connections at the uni. Simply put, what I did do that maybe helpful for you was take into consideration how my resume looked, included my time at a Korean uni learning Korean, and when I went in for the interview I told them I already had a job offer(this was true) but I was waiting for the uni's decision because I really wanted to work for them. Then I gave them a deadline of when I needed a decision from them.

For me I had three uni's offer jobs to me in Seoul and outside of Seoul. I guess the best advice is to play up your strengths.

I have a BS and work for a decent University. A friend of mine works here and one of the head teachers who I met a few times let me know about an opening and put in a good word for me.

The easiest way I know of is knowing people who work at universities. Failing this, I would recommend canvassing campuses and you may find one that is hiring. Not all Universities advertise on Dave's.
