When I try to shut down my Windows XP now, it restarts instead of shutting down. Is this a virus? Why won't it shut down?

You can try using one of these scans:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FixBlast.exe

http://www.sophos.com/support/disinfection/blastera.html

http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger.exe

The first two will check for Blast virus (my computer had it a couple of weeks ago). The last link is to a powerful scan which checks for about 40 different viruses.

I ran all those scans and they say I don't have a virus. My explorer still closes and my computer won't shut down.

Maybe Gord knows. I'll add his id to the subject to get his attention.

I copy and pasted the following from the site windows-xp-tips. An excellent site for XP users.

"There are a number of users who have been complaining that their PC will no longer automatically power down/shut off without pressing the power off button on the computers unlike in Windows Me/95/2000. There could be a number of reasons for this - but the main one seems to be that ACPI is not enabled on the computer or in Windows XP. Here is how to enable it:
Click - Start - Control Panel - Performance and Maintenance - Power Options Tab
Then click APM - Enable Advanced Power Management Support"
