It's always seemed strange to me that there hasn't really been a proper film about this. At least not that I'm aware of... especially with other "fish out of water" movies being so popular. There was a thread about this once some years back that yielded few results - Just wondering if anyone knows of some others that fit the expat genre. I wish there were one about an English teacher in Korea (or anywhere really), but apparently there's not.
Lost in Translation
Eat Pray Love
The Ramen Girl
Under The Tuscan Sun
The Beach
Brokedown Palace
The Constant Gardener
The Quiet American
The Painted Veil
Beyond Borders
Anyone know of some others? Even a proper documentary? |

The Dreamers- it's about a 20 year old American studying French in Paris in May of 1968, a tumultuous time in Paris. I quite enjoyed it, but many people I know did not. It's not for everyone. It's artsy and could be considered pretentious. It's pretty weird in its sexual themes but I really liked it because it was largely about finding yourself in another culture, and it was about movies and movie buffs. |

L'auberge espagnole. It's about Erasmus students in Barcelona. I think it's probably a lot more enjoyable if you actually were an Erasmus student but it's entertaining nonetheless. |

There was one a couple of years back about an English teacher in Bangkok who fell in love with a bar girl, but I can't remember the name of it............... |

Movies about expats are quite common. However I don't think language teachers really rank up there in cinematic appeal.. |

Mr. Baseball starring Tom Selleck (1992). Good movie, great scenes for anyone that has gone through the adjustments of expat life. About a major league player adjusting to life after getting traded to the Japan League. |

There was talk of doing one in Korea a couple years ago
Quote: |
In the vein of "Meet the Parents" and inspired by real events, the pitch follows an American guy who falls in love with a Korean woman while teaching English as a second language. He proposes marriage and she says yes, with a condition: Her Korean family must approve and they must have a traditional wedding in Korea. So the groom makes the trip with his family in an effort to marry his true love.
Lionsgate would not confirm that the deal had closed. |

The movie is still categorized as under development. At least with an American writing the movie the chances of having buffoonish white guys that you typically find in Korean movies and TV shows decreases. |
