Last week my recruitment agency asked if I'd like to work in a public school or a hagwon. I said a hagwon because I'd prefer the working hours (no early starts) and there'd be more contact with foreign teachers (I read that I'd probably be the only foreign teacher in a public school). I also read that the pay would be better for a starting teacher.

I think I have all the qualifications needed to work in a public school apart from teaching experience (I only have the 6 hours assessed teaching practice from the TEFL course). For a first teaching job would you say a public school or a hagwon is better? Based on what I've read it seems I should stay clear of hagwons as much as possible.

Both can be bad and both can be good. It really depends on management along with other miscellaneous factors. Research each employer as much as possible and then roll the dice.
