I'm going to be graduating soon, and I have been looking into teaching in Korea. I have spent hours looking through different forums, and websites as to the best way of getting a teaching job in Korea.
Some specific questions I have are:
-Is it better to try and find a job on my own, or a recruitment organization?
-Is their any specific recruitment organizations that are better then others?

I recommend using a recruiter if you have no prior experience, especially since you are outside of the country. But, don't let the recruiters get too pushy on you. Keep in mind that all they want is for you to sign and start your position so they can get their commission. Take your time in looking for a job, email a number of recruitment agencies. If something seems fishy to you use your instincts and wait until you find a position that seems right for you. There are endless factors to consider into the equation, so again I stress to simply use your instincts. Also, sometimes recruiters will offer a job that is hard for them to get rid of first.
With any business some agencies are better than others. As long as you do some research you should be fine. Keep in mind that just because a recruiter may be a small business doesn't mean they are a bad recruiter. In fact going with a smaller agency can usually mean more personal attention, especially if any problems occur upon your arrival. Whatever you do, make sure to verify that the agency is IN Korea, or has a branch in Korea. It is important to have someone to fall back on once you are here incase a situation arises. Most places have a person in, for instance, the US recruiting along with a Korean on the other side tying up the loose ends. That is typical and OK. Good luck. |
