I'm sick. I had to go to the doctor today. My boss sends this guy at my work to drive me to the hospital (because Americans are incapable of driving themselves). We go to the hospital and no one speaks English. My already awful day becomes a nightmare. A little subtlety would be nice, but there is no hope of that in Korea. The guy from my work is really taking advantage of the situation and acting like my father and telling me where to sit, pointing and pointing where I should go. The doctor visit comes to an end and we go back to the school. He asks me "school or home" and I say "home". He drops me off at home, but I wanted to see what he would do in the office, so I walked to the school quickly (he didn't see me) and wanted to see how he dealt with the situation in the office. Sure enough, I am coming up to the school and see him RUNNING into the school. I follow him into the school. I'm standing outside of the office. I'm listening. He's talking all about my information with EVERYONE. I walk in the office and all of the korean heads suddenly go down... nose to the desk. I went to my principal and said "why is he talking about my medical information to everyone?"
It didn't go so well. They of course just said that they were wishing the best for me and that I didn't understand Korean culture and this and that. It just seems to me that whenever the Koreans at my school get one piece of information about me, they go CRAZY talking about it as quick as they can. The information spreads like WILDFIRE throughout the school. Have they never heard of something called privacy? |

NOPE.
It really is a culture thing...
and it is NOT just about the foreigner... when one of my K-co-workers got sick and had to take a semester off work we knew ALL about everything as she got better and when she would return to work....
Welcome to the family.

It's the next day and they're making me work. I'm guessing this is my punishment for yesterday.
There is a Korean teacher here who got a week off just because one of his relatives were sick. The foreigner must work while sick. My contract says I get 10 sick days. I can't believe it. If I bring up the contract, it will start an argument which will result in firing and some fu's. I know it. This is ridiculous. |

"Good morning kids. Your teacher is very, very sick today. I'd like you to be very quiet and kind today, please."
Works for me. The co-teachers take the class and you get to go to the teachers' office and 'look very sick'. Everyones' face is saved, and you don't have to teach. However, you are expected to go to work when your sick in Korea. |

Well gosh, I don't know. When you got out of the hospital, did you go straight home or did you tail your escort back to your school and try to get into an argument with them? Sounds like you're cool to go back to work. |

I am Korean, and I am born in the USA. My family and relatives are like that too.
This is a WORLDWIDE phenomenon with Korean people - not just in Korea. |

If you learn a bit of Korean -- heck, if you go into the hospital with a Korean phrasebook -- you will be able to take care of your own business like an adult AND have complete privacy. |
