There was a period I was doing it 3 times a week - so I know all its ins and outs for sure.
Bring some cash and you can get food/water at a premium ontop. Nice Buddhist restaurant at the temple ontop too.
The fav. path of mine is to start at Sadang (don't know what exit, but just go out and start working your way to the mountain through the streets - you'll hit a street with many "mountain" signs. Follow it and then you'll eventually turn to your left). Climb , starts quite steep but once up a bit, levels out. Keep going along the ridge until the observatory (you'll keep seeing it and climbing up with ropes will be your last "summit". ). From there, go down and you'll hit the temple.
2 options from there. One, go right and you'll climb some stairs and then can take a trail / stairs to SNU. Catch a bus to Nakseongdae station.
Second option is to go left. Walk down following the ravine for about an hour. Beautiful. You'll come out in Gwanak City. About 800m to get to the subway station on Line 4 back to Sadang.
leave early - gets really busy this time of year on top and frustrating having to wait for lots of people dressed to the nines.
Great views along the way - nice, semi difficult mountain. About 900m elevation.
