All of the foreign teachers had to sign documents to get local background checks here in Korea.

Is this a normal practice?

Yes, I'm in the same boat, I have to get one for EPIK. But does anyone know if the Korean criminal check has to be in English or just the korean one they give you?
My current hagwon boss told me they can translate it to english but it costs 50k won.

Korean background checks? You wouldn't even be here if you had broken the law, right? So what's the purpose?

I recently returned to Korea and my boss asked me to sign a form which was to get a Criminal Background Check from the last time I was here I'm guessing.
It cost me nothing and will show up nothing so 'sure' I signed it.

Excuse me, since when did we have to do this?
I have been here 3 years, not once was I ever told about doing this. BTW, how do you get a Korean criminal records check if you aren't a citizen of Korea?

explain that please?

I had a principal in Ilsan ask me for a criminal check for Pyeongtaek where I was currently living. I asked my co-teacher about it, he called the office, they called the police, and the police said if the principal in Ilsan really wanted a criminal check then he would have to request it, not the teacher.

That's all I know.

Your ARC card establishes an identity, that's what they used as the person they were checking for.

I'm in the clear, I just thought it was a little weird out of the blue.

One of the other foreign teachers was a little rowdy in public a fews days ago, that could have sparked it. Other than that I don't see a reason other than near-end of contract tactics to avoid paying off the bonus.
