In Canada you "bum a cigarette". In the UK you "get a fag". Put them together and what do you get?

Actually back where I'm from 'bumming a fag' means that the smoker leaves the butt end all wet and soggy.

You know, you and a friend are going twos-up on a fag and when he passes it to you, you take a puff on it but the but is all soggy.

'Why do you always bum your fags man? It's disgusting'

I've noticed when I'm with a group of friends that are mostly Amercians I do slip into a more Americanised accent. Doesn't bother me though

On the flip side when I'm with other English mates I really tend to slip into a very English accent and use as many British slangs as I can because I find it fun and kind of re-affirming...

Nothing like seeing a hot s3xy young hottie in a miniskirt walk past, looking at her, looking at your mate, pursing you lips whilst sucking in air and then saying

'there should be laws mate, there should be laws...'

I also love how me an my mate can be talking utter nonsense, theings that most listeners can't make head nor tail of but we still know what each other is taking about at the same time....

'should be laws mate, should be laws...'

'I know, I'll be writing a strongly worded letter about that...'

'Her arse is singing to me...'

'it can tap dance, play a triple quarted, do a Frank Bruno impression and break the laws of thermodynamics as well... disgusting...'

'It's not on is it?'

'It's not Cilla, it's not...'

Another one is we sometimes refer to people that don't exist or invisible alter egos when we want to make a strong point or say something a bit out of line to deflect the tension.

Example - you're at the bar and one of you wants to remind the other that he still hasn't paid you back that 20,000 from two months ago... But you don't really wan to bring it up.... The barman gives you your beers and you look over at and address an empty chair behind you and say

'What's that bobby Davro? Tell him to buy these and you'll knock a fiver off of the twenty from last time.. ok, yes, good idea..'

And your friend will turn to the empty space next to him and say

'What's that Angelina..? You're broke until payday but you'll pay him back next week... yes, yes...'

Very odd to others I'm sure but fills the time and is cheap fun and giggles...

Another is we were annoyed that certain fave shops or cafes in Itaewon had dissapeared or one of us has a cr*p sense of direction

'Could've sworn it was here last time.. It bloody was, gah! Bloody Koreans and their floating restaurants.. Don't know why they can't just leave them tethered down where they are, but no, they have to go floating them off on top of other buildings while your not looking just to take the piss and confuse you...'

And then after this has become a long standing in-joke for when you get lost or can't find somewhere and you're out with a couple of others who aren't familliar with the in-joke and you take them for a meal but end up in the wrong part of town...

'Bloody hell, it's bloody floated off again, bloody floating restaurants, pain in the arse... could be anywhere, probably nipped down to Busan for a couple of hours.. no consideration for our plans, no...'

And of course the others think you're a total loon especially as a few seconds later a hottie walks buy and your mate comes out with

'good lord, look at that a full bloody orchestra up there, what does she think she's playing at...'

Not being funny but do you really talk like that? I use a fair amount of slang but if I heard someone talking like that Id think they were a total knob

In England you say bum bag, in America you say fanny pack. Fanny in England means vagina. So if an English person tells you you have a nice fanny...

Good to know. I've never heard that before. Smile

I spent a lot of time with friends from the UK and New Zealand the last time I was in Korea. I think I did pick up on their use of the language but in subtle ways, like using "a bit" instead of "a little" which is more common in the US.

The expression that amuses me is "knock you up" where in the US we say "wake you up." If you knock someone up here, you've gotten her pregnant.

do u mean 'sweating like a paedo in a playground'?

I had to stop using "Sweating like a scouser in Dixon's". Takes too long to explain.

Non-Brits seem to understand the expression "It's a bit Pearl Harbour" when it's cold so I'm keeping that going.

My favorites are "A shit-ton" and any use of ass as an intensifier like in "that's a big ass hamburger"

I'm American, but after working with Brits a lot, I say, "At the end of the day....," a lot. I like it.
