If you think that your real identity doesn't extend beyond the physical body. then it's natural to assume that we all just rot away to oblivion.
Animals don't have the capacity for philosophical inquiry beyond the bodily conception of life, but humans do.
There is no need of joining any organized religion, but to become spiritually elevated it certainly helps to follow the instructions of a spiritually perfected realized soul and to associate with people who are also sincerely trying to progress on a spiritual path.
There surely are many bogus people who are materially motivated to cheat in the name of religion, yoga, or spirituality, but that doesn't mean that everyone is in it for the money (and Jesus certainly wasn't.)
A bona fide spiritual master has no propensity to cheat or exploit others. His (or her) only business is to help fallen souls end their suffering of repeated birth, death, old age and disease in this world and become immortal.
