I'm thinking about starting a unit about bugs at my school. I have a couple of bug questions.

First: I've noticed in various places you can buy a pet beetle. Does anyone know what kind of beetle this is? I wonder how you take care of a pet beetle.

Second: When I was in elementary school, we had caterpillars that we watched cocoon and then turn into butterflies that we released. Does this exist in Korea?

I've seen them it's some kind of termite. You just put it in a cage with a lump of wood. It eats the wood.

I seen big hercules beetles for sale. I guess they live only a few weeks and then die as bugs typically do. I wonder if you can get live silk worm larvae? If so, that might make a good a specimin.

The beetles you buy are stag beetles or rhinocerous beetles.

You also buy little tubs of feeding jelly which the beetle eat.

I think they live quite a long time but generally don't survive over the winter.

I think you can also buy the larvae which eat dead wood or compost - they look like big fat grubs.

Caterpillars turning into butterflies certainly exists in Korea but I don't know if you can buy ready made kits to do it here.

When I first saw stag beetles for sale I thought they were for eating. But anyways you can buy the beetles grown or as larva, you can get breeding pairs, terrarium kits, the works. A large pet store will have a whole section when it's beetle season.

Ask a science teacher where they get the silkworms. I've seen elem kids raising them and observing their life cycle. If the science teacher doesn't know you can always go to the market and get the kind for eating.
