Exactly what it says. Going this weekend to get a new computer, no monitor needed. I'd like to know what I can expect for this price tag, at a reputable dealer with a good A/S policy.

Anybody been to Yongsan recently?

This site will give you an idea.....

http://www.icoda.co.kr/i_orangepc/index.html

1 mill should get you a system with

i5 CPU
4-6GB DDR3 RAM
mid-range GPU (maybe an Nvidia GTS250 or an ATI HD4850)
1TB HDD

If you're not a power user you can get a Core 2 Duo system with a low-end graphics card for around 500,000.

Buy the cheaper system eamo mentioned and spend the extra cash on a nice monitor or speakers. You don't need a whole lot of processing/graphics power for movies and music.

You don't need much power for a HTPC (unless you want to game on it).

A cpu like an E7500 would be plenty.....130,000

Low-end video card like a ATI HD5670.....110,000

4GB ddr2 RAM.....150,000

The expensive part would be the case......HTPC cases under 200,000 are hard to find in Korea.

I paid 170,000 for the Silverstone LC-17b.......pretty good HTPC case.

I'm going to run a nettop as a HTPC. They output 1080, and are quiet and small. For less than what the case would cost on eamo's set up.

Either this..

Is it possible to get something that would play 1080p movies for that cheap? We've got our current computer hooked up to the TV (42" LCD Full HD), but it can't handle more than 720p unless you tweak the quality settings in GOM.

Your current computer must be very old if it can't handle more than 720p.

A nettop will play 1080i/p movies.....but you won't find one for less than the case I mentioned, Senior! Less than 170,000?

Nettops are fine and good.......but you can't add extra HDD's to them.....so you're stuck with the small drive in them...160GB? About enough for 12 HD movies.

A full-sized HTPC could hold, I dunno, about 10 1.5TB drives.......15TB's!! That's a lot of HD content.

And you can't put a blu-ray drive in them and I doubt they have the power to play blu-ray files.......so blu-ray is out.....which is a shame if you have a Full HD TV.....

If I had to choose between a 400,000 nettop with all its limitations, and a 600,000 HTPC which has virtually no limitations......I'd go go for the HTPC.

ㅋㅋ Obviously I was exaggerating slightly.

It's easy enough to add an external drive. The OP could set up a NAS/file server with the money left over.

It should be able to. There is an ASrock nettop with the Atom 330 and nvidia graphics which has a blue ray drive.

The biggest limitations of a full sized htpc are size and noise. For me, they pretty much out weigh all the advantages.

The OP has some coin and a large TV, so a full sized HTPC may suit his needs better than a nettop.

I don't want to derail this conversation too much, but are you sure you need a new PC?

I mean if you need a new PC for traditional PC type things then by all means get that. But if what you really want is some way to stream content to your tv, you might want to consider other ways of doing that.

I use a PS3 and stream stuff wirelessly from my laptop and that would run you way less than your million won. You can also just plug in a USB hard drive if 1080p proves too much for your network.

Just saying it's a lot less than your million won and will do the same job when it comes to putting videos on your tv.

Yeah, a *real* PC would be best. In addition to needing something to play videos/youtube/etc, I also need to do the every-day stuff like surf the web, use Office, edit the occasional video or photo. Just want something that won't get too outdated over the next 2 or 3 years.
