I'm looking for a gym in Seoul that has a power rack. I would prefer a gym near Gangnam, but am willing to travel.

Here is a photo of the rack I'm looking for:

I've seen them in 1/2 of the gyms I've worked out in...have a friend/coworker do a Naver/Daum search of health clubs in your area, print up the map and do some exploring. I'm sure you'll find one.

You've seen power racks, or smith machines? I've looked at a few gyms and many had smith machines, but none had power racks.

A smith machine has a barbell fixed within steel rails:

A power rack is basically a cage that allows one to do free-weight exercises (i.e. squats) safely.

Squats. The world's best exercise if done without a smith machine or some other contraption.

Not my gym and it drives me crazy.

Keep looking until you find one. Smith Machines are for losers Smile

I second what seoulsucker said: about half the gyms in Korea seem to have them.

Now, if I could only find a gym near me that was bigger than my living room.

How about a gym that has rubber bumper plates (for doing explosive movements) in Seoul?

Thanks for the graphic aids...I know the difference. Wink

In over 6 years in Korea I've lived in Dongdaemun, Gyeongido, Sinchon, Gimpo, Hongdae, and now Itaewon. I've had memberships to over 8 gyms in those areas.

I clearly remember using the power racks for my routines in three of them. Another gym had one, but they had converted it into a DESK. Laughing

What are the names and locations of the gyms with power racks?

The gym I'm at now has one. Woori Fitness, between Hansung Univ. Station and Soonshin Women's Univ. Station. Next to the Hi-Mart.

Samwon Fitness on Kyungridan/Itaewon had a rack last year.

Swash Fitness at the Donggyo-dong Samgeori in Hongdae had one in 2008.

RUF Fitness at the Gayang Homeplus had one in 2007.

BM Fitness in Sinchon did not have one in 2006.

???? Fitness in Janghyun-ri, Namyangju-si, Gyeonggi-do had one in 2005.

I don't know if half of these places are even open.

I would be that if you did a Naver search for gyms in your area and made a few calls (with the help of a friend, if needed) that you could find one in less than 30 min.

Take the time to do that on the front end and you won't waste valuable gym time humping across the city to find equipment that's in your own backyard.

Thanks seoulsucker. Do you by chance know the Korean name for "power rack"?

This is what a Naver search of 파워랙 yields.

Healthbox gym halfway between Nonhyeon and Shinnonhyeon Stations on the 4th floor of the Recycle City building (next to Outback) has one. 15 minutes walk from Gangnam Station, 5 minutes from either of the other two.

Judging from a post a few weeks ago, Forest Fitness closer to Gangnam Station Exit 7 has one too, and by its size and cost Muscle Factory behind the CGV building probably does also. Can't personally confirm the last two gyms.
