Backpacks are the easiest things to steal from for thieves and pickpockets.
You can't see you BP if it's in back of you. It's worse than a briefcase which is at your side. The fannypack is in front of you, which is tough to steal from.
It's rampant in Asia - go watch the videos of thieves on YT. |
Put a teeny lock on the small pocket zippers, where you keep your wallet, keys, and pod. Just an easy-to-open one, but it deters thievery.
I think I'd notice if someone stole the laptop out of the larger compartment.
Just something I picked up from traveling a lot. |

Why do fathers always pamper the daughters while forcing the sons into manual labor? Why did my Daddy divorce my Mommy and write me out of his will? WHYYY? |

I think it may be a cultural thing. When I went back to Vancouver to live there for a while, I was actually surprised that almost every 2nd person walking past me was wearing a backpack. Then again, I wasn't used to the whole "no plastic bags" thing. Plastic bags are becoming a social stigma because of the environmental problems they cause. Everyone either brings those cloth bags or backpacks when they go shopping. Well, almost everyone under the age of 50 (aka environmentally aware people).
I use my backpack around Seoul esp. when I go hiking, am traveling somewhere for a weekend and want to pack light, or when I go shopping to Dongdaemun. I prefer stuffing my loot in a trusty backpack than carrying around a few bags. So, sorry, OP, but gotta disagree with you on this one. As for the necktie plus backpack combo: perhaps those people just got off work and have to travel out of the city somewhere? I dunno, if you care, why not go ask them? You should! Then report back here. Haha.
Perhaps the OP needs to join Bruno in some kind of fashion TV show where they find backpackers and ridicule them. Wouldn't that be fabulous! |

A big problem with backpacks is their color and material. I'd find them a lot less hideous on the average person if they color coordinated with the rest of their outfit and were made out of different materials.
Women's backpacks look far more sensible than men's. |

You've never been to Korea have you? Saying it's rampant in Asia is like saying if something happens in Mexico it must happen in Canada as well. They are both a part of North America after all!
And the American named fanny pack is to be worn behind you, or on your "fanny". Others call it a "bum bag" since their fanny is on the other side. |
You're right, the fannypack is SUPPOSED to be on the fanny.
However, there are two major reasons people put it in front:
1) ease of theft
2) OMTS (Old Man Tourist Syndrome) |

Why were you surprised? Canada is one of the world's scruffiest nations... |

The usual contents of my sidebag/messenger bag/or backpack-
-a book
-some language study materials
-ipod
-darts
-sunglass case
-this time a year, a sweater of some sort.
from time to time...
-a camera
-water bottle
-toothbrush/paste
-deoderant stick
If you are only leaving the house for an hour or two and don't wander very far, I guess a bag would not be very necessary. But if you are leaving the house for the day and don't drive the car, what would make more sense than to bring a long some sort of bag?
I guess those who don't bring anything along don't have much to do. What does the OP do when he leaves for the day and takes a 40+min subway ride? Straight to the tavern? |

The front is the fanny if you are from the UK. |

Front? Do women in the UK have genitals in the bellybutton region? In the rest of the world I think it's more centered... But I guess that would be a funny place to have a pack (although the area's right for a sack). |

I just have to say that people look f'n ridiculous standing outside clubs on saturday night wearing backpacks. especially if they are also wearing some sort of club fashion and the bags are packed full.
Seriously, get a hotel room or a locker in the subway for your stupid looking bag if you are going out in hongdae. |

@ banana man
If you think I had an easy childhood, you're mistaken. I've only started getting presents like this one because I've proven myself to be a responsible adult. I worked 35 hours a week when I was in high school, and worked full time and then some to pay for college and my apartment.
Being halfway across the world softened him. Had I been a son, I doubt my treatment would have been any different. I'm not some princess that always got whatever I wanted. I'm the eldest, and I fought hard to earn respect.
My parents are separated. I've no IDEA what's in their wills, and don't care much. The only things that I'd want would be a painting that my mother did in university, and the pearl necklace that my grandfather hand-picked the pearls for. Money is something you earn on your own. My family taught me that. Do you think that, perhaps, I may have gotten my family some nifty gifts in the past as well? Digital cameras? Espresso machines? It isn't one way. I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but not all daughters are princesses. |

Thread=win. Way better than most stuff about Koreans looking at people. |
Maybe you like it so much because you've finally found an outlet where people actually respond to your diarrhea of the mouth. |
Ohh, strike 1. Take your backpack and get out of this topic. |
