My understanding is that Korean health insurance only covers you when you are in Korea. What is a good option for when you travel out of the country for a short time? How much does it generally cost?

I always use World Nomads. Cheap and easy, all done on the net. Never made a claim though.

At the airport in Incheon, there's a booth where you can by traveler's insurance. It's very cheap and covers a lot. The documentation you sign is in both Korean and English.

I used to do this also, then about a year ago they told me that the only booth I could go to was the Samsung one (coincidentally the furthest one from where I had check in) because the others no longer served foreigners. I didn't find it particularly cheap, or the service particularly impressive, so I've used World Nomads since then, and find it superior in every way.

I have claimed with World Nomads after an accident I had in the US (i'm from Australia). They had a department of nurses that would call me a few times a day for the first few days out of hospital. They covered the cost of the follow up visit to make sure everything was healing ok. It was a better experience than I expected it to be. The nurses were super friendly. The billing department were more demanding, I had to fax them lots of different things, but they paid everything so I have no complaints. I recommend them to everyone I know. Saved me $19,000 in medical bills.
