For many, Seoul does not quite live up to it's hype.

Some people do really like Seoul and have a good time there. They see it as a place with lots of things to do, lots of opportunites and a lot to offer. More power to them.

But, a lot of people end up being pretty dissappointed with Seoul.

The truth is, if you've spent a lot of time living in other big international cities, Seoul pales in comparison. If you grew up In LA, San Francisco, NYC or some other world class city, you may come to Seoul and say to yourself "Is this it?" It will just feel like it's not quite "happening" in Seoul.

I have found that most people who really like Seoul are from smaller towns or smaller cities. And for most of them, Seoul is their first adventure into big city living. So naturally, they are blown away by it.

But personally. When I came to Seoul. I was sorely dissappointed by the lack of variety, lack of beauty, and lack of diversity. The things that any good big city should have, Seoul seems to be lacking.

Some people like Seoul and that's great. But I just want to say. Seoul is hyped up a LOT, expecially on this forum. But for many people, other Korean cities would suite them much better.

And I don't know about you all. But when I compare Seoul to other huge cities i've been to, like Bangkok, NYC, Tokyo, LA, Rio De Janeiro, Shanghai..... Seoul is at the very bottom.

After my contact is up here. I'm gonna get the heck out of the Seoul area and go down south Smile Other Korean cities like Busan, Gwangju and even smaller cities can be very nice. And you can do almost all the same things in these cities as you can in Seoul. They offer almost all the good things about Seoul, without the bad.

I think Busan, Gwanju, and a few other smaller cities are the most ideal places in Korea to live.

Not Seoul.

Just one man's opinion.....

But then again like what you said, it's just your OPINION.

Wow! You joined this board three days ago. You're probably one of the following: a newbie who joined this board three days ago and have only visited a few of the touristy areas thus far, have recently become infatuated with a non-Seoul local, or are a troll.

Actually i've spent a total of a year and a half in Korea. The first time I came here was in 2007 and I was living far far away from the Seoul area during my first contract.

You act as though we are required to join this forum right when we move here.....

I'm just saying. For me. During my first contract when I was living by the beach in the Southern part of this country, it was a much, much more interesting experience. My experience in the Seoul area has been very mediocre in comparison.

Many other people i've met feel the same way.

Korea is alright.

I'm talking about the Seoul area here. Not the entire country.

I think Seoul, compared to LA, New York, London or even Manchester where I'm from, pales in comparison. BUT, if you want to live in Korea, it's the only place to live to experience big city living and anything approaching cultural diversity.
Busan is okay but there is not as much going on, not as many different restaurants (although I do think the Korean restaurants are better in the south) and the people are rude, weird and they stare a lot. And the beaches are shit.
And to be honest, I've not heard Seoul 'over-hyped' on these boards. In fact, lots of people bitch about it. But when they say it is the only place in Korea to get decent foreign food (not just Western), live music, art and culture, they ain't lying.

Yeah, it depends what kind of lifestyle you want to live and where you're at in life.

If you're really young and partying and going out is priority number one. Seoul is the spot.

If you're a little older and partying and going out isn't top priority anymore, Seoul might not be so good.

I've seen Seoul hyped up a lot of this forum. With that "Cohibas rule" and the hundreds of people saying Seoul is the best and only place to live in Korea. The hype is there for sure.

People always talk about restaurants. I don;t care about restaurants personally. I just eat whatever.

LOS ANGELES?!

You have got to be kidding me.

What an urban wasteland.

LA has NOTHING on Seoul.

Including LA in your list pretty much strips your whole post of credibility.
