My then-husband and I had a loud neighboring dog that barked right across from our balcony, starting most mornings at 7 am. So every time it woke us up, one of us walked down and knocked on their door until someone came. We stated calmly (in Korean), every time, that the dog was affecting our lives (since we can't get enough sleep). We did it so often they probably thought we were crazy after a while. They got really pissed at our continued intrusions, but there was really no way they could argue either. We also left very detailed, very civil notes (in Korean) in their mailbox.

In a few weeks, the dog disappeared.

Agree that the civil appraoch is the best, if they will answer the door. I had the same problem except ii was always in the middle of the night when the dog would start up and the owners would never come to the door no matter how hard I knocked.

If you could feed the dog exlax everyday until the owners got sick of cleaning up the poo and gave the dog away that might do the trick.

I like this approach also, however this is what i would do.

I would get one of those silent dog whistles, and I would blow that thing in the hallway late at night and cause their dog to begin barking at a time it is uncomfortable to the owners..and I would do it over and over, every single night.

Hopefully, they would get tired of being awoken by the noise themselves, and find some way to put an end to the barking.

Thanks for all the advice...it really gave me a laugh.

Last night, at 2 and 4 am, I went over to the house (the dogs live in the house behind my villa). The owners refused to answer the door. This morning I went to the police station with a Korean friend. The police were very professional about it (along with making jokes about cutting the dogs head off) and went to the house right away. The dogs (I found out it's two) were barking away, but the owners apparently weren't there and said they'd come back. I've seen them come back a few times but the owners are either not there or refusing to answer the door. Apparently they're trying again tomorrow.

Going to look into the electronic device option, but wonder how expensive that is. But moving is expensive also, and that's what it's gonna come down to if this continues.

Man, some of you are harsh! Feed the dogs rat poison? Come on now...

Anyway, my dog was a barker when we first got him and we almost had to get rid of him because he was disturbing the neighbors in our apartment complex (in the U.S.). We discovered this collar that sprayed a citronella scent every time he barked, which startled him and caused him to stop barking. After the first few times of wearing it, he would stop barking immediately when we put it on him. Now, we have no problem at all with him barking. They also make shock collars, but I wouldn't recommend those because they can be dangerous and cause injury to the dog if used incorrectly.

Anyway, I don't know if that sort of thing would be readily available in Korea or what the status is on ordering products online from out of the country, but maybe you could look into it and suggest it to the owners. I'm sure it's driving you crazy to hear the constant barking, but it's kind of sad to me for the dog's sake. A lot of times dogs that bark endlessly are somewhat neglected in that they receive little attention or exercise. They're basically just trying to get attention or have an outlet for their excessive energy.

Then again, I just noticed you said they "want it to bark." Hmm...they probably won't be amenable to the idea of buying a device to make it stop barking. I don't know what to tell you. Just please don't feed the thing rat poison or chocolate out of frustration! Heh...

Everytime the dog barks call the owners and ask them to make the dog be quiet. They'll get the point when their phones are constantly ringing. If they switch them off you can go knock on the door and tell them you couldn't reach them by phone and politely ask them to keep the dog quiet.

The dog barks constantly because it is miserable. Because koreans usually haven't the first clue about how to keep dogs or even interract with them.

If it was up to me Koreans wouldn't be allowed to keep pets until they'd gone through an induction course on how to look after animals.
