| I second the zombie movie recommendation if you're into them - the original trio of Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead is quality. |
There's a reason I didn't mention Day of the Dead, that one really is for completists only. George Romero had his funding cut off before he finished making the movie, and it really shows. I like the premise, but the acting is SO bad that I could barely finish watching it.

I'm a big zombie movie fan, so if you haven't seen them yet:
Night of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead (the 1973 original is better, but the 2004 remake is still fun)
28 Days Later |
You should also check out Dead Snow (Nazi zombies) and Zombieland (Bill Murray as a zombie!) if you like zombie horror/comedies. |
Since this threads already been derailed, we might as well take it even further off course by discussing zombie comedies. Shaun of the Dead really is the Cadillac of this subgenre, and the indie Zombie Honeymoon is definitely worth your time. I've only seen excerpts of it, but I really want to get my hands on a copy of the microbudget Stink of Flesh (tagline "How do you lead an alternative lifestyle... When everybody's dead?"), but no one ever seems to be seeding it on Bit Torrent. |

The Omen was an excellent movie. A lot of weird stuff happened to the crew when they were filming the movie. Some of them even got killed, I think.
I recommend The Hostel to those of you who haven't seen it yet. It's more of a gore genre than horror, like the Saw series, but enjoyable nonetheless. Even the sequel, The Hostel II, was pretty good. The Shinning, Cape Fear, R-Point (Korean film), the Descent 1 and 2 are also recommended. The Collector, on the other hand, I didn't like. |

Thanks to everyone for some great suggestions! Keep them coming.
Thank you English Matt for your post. I think you said everything that needed saying so my response would only be redundant.
I have only seen Night of the Living Dead and would like to see the rest. Is there a trilogy or are the other movies mentioned just in the same genre?
Loved, loved, loved Let the Right One In. Probably the best vampire movie I have ever seen.
I enjoy reading Lovecraft but I think his books are very hard to translate to screen, kind of like Steven King's books. I haven't seen In the Mouth of Madness in a while but if I remember correctly it was really good.
Kurtz, not arguing with you about the Exorcist. I think I watched that in high school alone in the dark and it's definitely a classic. For the sake of trivia, I think the demon flashes were added when a new edition of the movie was released a few years ago. They are scary, but not part of the original.
I'm a big fan of Guillermo del Toro so I would recommend Pan's Labyrinth and The Orphanage to anyone who hasn't seen them. My copy of The Orphanage didn't have subtitles and my high school Spanish wasn't quite up to translating everything, but I still enjoyed the movie. Very creepy and disturbing.
Carnival of Souls might be worth watching if anyone is really interested in the genre. In my opinion, the movie itself wasn't that good-they used a lot of locals for the film, not professional actors-but the final dancing scene is one of the creepiest I've seen on film and supposedly set the stage for future horror films. |

I agree that Saw is just too over the top. I watched the first few and thought "well it's gross but something a bit different at least" but then it just got sick for the sake of being sick and I lost interest. I read a review of the most recent one and they listed some of the traps/torture devices and I'm thinking to myself, why on earth would I want to sit through that?
Anyway, some others are The Shining, Lost Highway, Orphan, Wolf Creek, The Ninth Gate, The Thing...could probably list a ton more if I spent a bit of time on imdb. Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings) did a couple of horror movies before he became big, Braindead, Bad Taste, maybe one or two more..more in the comedy-horror genre than thriller/psychological horror which the OP seems to prefer (going by his/her list). |

Cloverfield
Sleepy Hollow
Severance
Wrong Turn - It's not had great reviews, but I quite enjoyed it......a far better take on mutant hillbillies than The Hills Have Eyes - watching babies being shot and women being raped is not my idea of a good watch.
Just downloading Wrong Turn 2.....can't sleep, more's the pity.......which has a 78% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes (much, much better than the 40% the first one got) so I have high hopes |

+1 to these movies:
The Thing (one of my favourite movies - great suspense)
Pandorum (love the way you really feel how much time has passed, and the ending)
On the subject of Lovecraft, I found a hidden gem - "Dagon". Classic lovecraftian tale, and good, and I may have been imagining it, but it seemed to me that some parts of it were shot as if they were a movie of a role playing session of the Call of Cthulu RPG. The nerdy protagonist gets presented with some sort of problem or puzzle - comes up with a plan... skillcheck... FAIL!
Also:
Blood: The Last Vampire, a good manga movie, quite short, that is very atmospheric and had pretty cutting edge animation for its time.
The Mist, based on a Stephen King short story wasn't bad. Some of the characters were pretty lame, but it was ok.
-1 to the Hostel movies - only saw the first half of number two, but sadistic sexual torture is not my idea of entertainment. That movie was just pure mental pollution. There is something very wrong with Eli Roth. |

Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead form George Romero's Dead trilogy, based on the same zombie phenomenon sweeping the globe. Day of the Dead, however, is pretty bad.
Romero continued the genre with Land of the Dead, which picks up where Day left off and Diary of the Dead, which is a prequel of sorts. Neither lives up to the standard set by Night or Dawn. |

| the ring and Juon, both great Japanese horror movies that in my opinion are much scarier than western horror movies. |

Shame... I loved Day of the Dead... but then again, I have pretty horrendous taste in films sometimes. Then, maybe forget about that one, but definitely check out Dawn of the Dead. The 2004 remake is also pretty good. As for zombie comedies, Shaun of the Dead is fantastic.
I don't like the Saw franchise and Hostel movies... I agree with what other posters are saying about torture porn, and I just think that they're quite disturbing.
Thought of some more.... An American Werewolf in London, It, and Candyman... love all of them. |

There is also a live action version starring Gianna Jun AKA Jeon Ji-hyun. It's the Sassy Girl kicking vampire ass.

Eli Roth is a hack. The only difference between Hostel 1 and 2 is that in the first one it was males getting killed and in the second it was females. Whoopdeedoo! |

I think I've seen The Wicker Man and liked it but found the ending disturbing. People being burned alive is not something I'm comfortable watching. I thought I wanted to watch The Hills Have Eyes one day when it came on tv but I happened to tune in just as a woman was being raped with her baby in the room and a man was being burned alive while his family watched. I don't think sadistic torture makes for a good movie. It might get a cheap scare out of an audience, but I prefer movies that involve more thought and effort to engage the audience.
The movie IT scared the hell out of me until it got to the ending with the cheesy muppet spider thing. Some ideas in books just don't translate well to the screen. I have always been terrified of clowns and when I watched this movie, I finally knew why. I first watched it in high school with two of my friends down the street from my house. When I had to leave, it was dark and foggy outside and both of them refused to walk me home because they didn't want to go outside. |
