Well, regarding the noise I have to accept that my 3 days experience in Daegu is very limited compared to anyone who lives there. So, perhaps I was just unlucky to arrive on the day of a military airshow. If this is not a daily spectacle, good. What I saw were 5 F-14 or F-15 flying pretty low and level, maybe making a low pass to look for any Tom'n'Toms, Starbucks of Coffee Bean A bit later in the day, helicopters (and not trying to sneak up on someone). We actually had to stop talking for a while. The trafficopters in Seoul are annoying but just a whisper compared to that. |

Sometimes there are a lot of military planes flying around, but it's definitely not a daily thing (although maybe in certain areas? Not in mine)
McDonalds is right across the road from Burger King in downtown Daegu. And there are 3 movie theaters within a 5 minute walk from Lotte Dept Store. There are tons and tons of coffee shops everywhere in Daegu and lots of convenience stores and Dunkin Donuts and Baskin Robbins.
I'd much rather live in Busan than Daegu, but if you're looking for movies, coffee or fast food we have plenty. |

I've heard planes from time to time as well. I live somewhat near camp walker though (although I don't even know if they have an airfield there).
My biggest complaint about Daegu is the lack of variety. Seoul has a few different areas to go eat and have fun, which are interesting in their own regard. Daegu is pretty much limited to downtown and it's pretty stale. The university areas don't compare to Seoul or even Busan and the rest of the city looks like every other street in Korea. The only exception is the Suseong-Gu area, but everything is so spread out and getting there (if you don't live nearby) is a chore in itself.
That said, I've enjoyed it here, but there is no way I would subject myself to living here for more than a year (I hope I don't have to bite my tongue in a few months...). |

+1 on variety! Like food, even a good thing becomes stale if you can't get enough choice over a long period of time.
Frankly, I found Busan to be a bit boring too. Fortunately we found a few things in favour during our visit to the 2009 rock concerts on the beach there: Bikini girls, great sandwiches and the Fuzzy Navel pub. Speaking with Spirit of the West, we've been drunk since we left (Seoul) and that makes any Korean city a beautiful place.
But the university area at Midnight was quieter than a Seoul cemetary. There's the area around the Film Festival (PIFF) which is a bit like Myeongdong, there is a mini-Itaewon near the main train station (if you ever wondered where the mothers and grandmothers of the Russian women in Itaewon work: there!) and then there's the beach.
Had the worst fried chicken ever near the concert beach but could compensate with lots of beer. Well we were on holiday, so being drunk from 10AM to 6AM is reasonable but again I may give a wrong impression of what might be a wonderful place to live. |

| I'm moving to Daegu at the end of April too, or at least will be, as soon as this wretched volcano dust settles... Thanks for the handy advice, in particular the maps and bus services! |

| Is there an English book store in Daegu? Or a way to order books in English from a site like Amazon? |

Here is a site with videos made by Keimyung University students. They can give you some more information about things to do in Daegu. It is updated weekly, so be sure to check back.

The 2nd floor of Kyobo has an English section. There's also Daegu Books (online) and you can order books from Seoul from whatthebook.com. |

Daegu isn't a bad place.
When i was looking for info on Daegu about 6 months ago, just before moving here, it sounded kinda awful. It's not that bad. I arrived in winter so it was a kind of dead place at that time, but now summers on the way it's a whole different place.
The city is quite like a lot of other cities here, made of concrete! Unless you make an effort to go out of the city and see other places, you may feel a little trapped.
The city has lots to offer and its SO easy to travel out and in to other places near or far. Seoul, Busan and other cities. There's also always something going on with Daegu Pockets. Some trip. Kinda fun when you gang up with friends and strangers to go off to do things. Never boring.
There's lots to do. The downtown area has good shopping and lot's of places to eat. Some better than others. The other week we randomly found a little korean place and ate well for 5,000. Was goood. Uh, downtown also has a cinema and IMAX. There's lots of little shops to investigate and if your bored, go with your friends to play wii.
There are swimming pools, great places for hiking and walking if thats what you're in to. Just south of the city is a water park. Theres the amusement park in the city. A few parks (not green grassy parks tho) where you can hang out, take a bike or volunteer like it do at the dog shelter and takes dogs a walk.
There's always something to do here. I won't lie. Sometimes you do feel like you want to scream. Lack of greenery and fresh air kills me. It can get too much but if that happens, hop on the train or bus and run away for a while.
Hope that helped???? Enjoy your time in Daegu and korea. |

| I realize I'm about a month late with this reply, but I'm heading to Daegu in 48-hours. I'll see some of you folks when I land. |
