because you hated your students?

I've been at the same middle school for two years. I just re-signed for my third.

I taught 1st grade boys and girls my first year. They were great. Any problems I had with them were a result of my inexperience.

Last year I taught 1st boys and 3rd girls. The 3rd grade girls were so-so. they were mostly ambivalent about English, but we made it work. I crushed the 1st grade boys. Every class went smoothly, and we had mutual respect and trust for each other. Mostly because I had an A+ co-teacher.

This year I have a group of 2nd grade girls who are the same as the 3rd graders last year.

My new group of 1st grade boys is a major problem. English is basically an excuse to goof off and act like zoo animals. They are easily the dumbest group of students I have taught. They are the loudest. This year was the first time a student has been openly disrespectful to my face. Both in Korean and English. There general behavior outside of English class is shocking. Within the first two weeks the classroom computers were disabled as they were surfing pornography. They also sexually harass my co-teacher.

I'm going to redouble my efforts after exams. But if things don't improve, I will quit in the summer. just a rant really.

You're absolutely right to consider quitting. I certainly cannot comprehend any teenagers acting in such an inappropriate and irresponsible manner, especially boys. When the job becomes taxing and wastes valuable energy, then you have to think about whether or not it's actually worth doing it anymore. Maybe you could enquire about whether or not you can beat them? That'd settle them down pretty quick.

I did not sign a new contract this year mainly because the age and overall quality of the new students has dropped significantly from my first year, and all of my superstars have moved on to middle school test-prep classes.

Yup. Unfortunately, I re-signed before I had met the new students.

Last year I had at least 10 students with better English than the average K English teacher. One or two were actually cool guys, with interests other than Starcraft and belting each other.

This year, I've yet to meet one student with better than average speaking skills. One or two have perfect listening, which is a worry, as I have been muttering a lot of obscenities under my breathe lately. I called one group zoo animals today, and one of the kids transmitted to the rest of the class. They got a kick out of it.

Are you kidding? I call them circus animals and they think it's a compliment. Plus I have some stories that I'll address at a later time when I've left the country and it's not so painfully obvious I'm posting through a sock.

Yea, they were loving it.

I've decided to just zen it out. I can control them, but it takes every ounce of my strength and will power. I don't want them to think they defeated me.

I only ask once. It's like training a dog. I only ask once, and only in English. If you let them wait until the third, fourth time you tell them to do something, they think that's okay for them to wait that long.

I dunno. These kids are a real pain, this batch. It's good to be leaving them. I've got three that I won't talk about until after I've left, or I'm posting through a proper account.

Yeah I must admit i'm thinking of not re signing and I've only really got one class that annoys me and then its only because they are cabbage patch kids

You have it much worse, damn i've never had open disrespect since my first week in a Hagwon, the student left shortly afterwards... sadly you haven't got that luxury at public school.

If I was in your situation I'd leave too

I just don't like the first graders. "mori apoon-ni?" I don't even think that's proper Korean, but they sure do understand "gwenchehnay-io, jeep-eh gai-yo" ... I'm supposed to try to corral and force English down the throat of a kid who's got her head down on her desk?

I've said it before, I'll say it again. If I come back to the peninsula to teach, I'll do it at a high school. A tech high school. At least I know where I stand.

Cabbage patch kids, in my country, just means the ones that look harmless enough, don't cause any grief but do absolutley nothing at all. The class i'm sick off are actually 5th graders, all boys, they are polite, respectful but just don't give a damn about English.

I asked their teacher if they could read Korean but she didn't get what I was meaning. I have them twice a week I don't really enjoy my 1st grade class either, but they actually speak and retain English much better than my 5th graders Very Happy

That's a fairly accurate description of my situation, as well. Apparently, my middle school is something of a "dumping ground" for academically/behaviorally challenged students in my region. I've been dealing with a lot of the same issues, and I'm also on the verge of quitting. All avenues of discipline have been exhausted. The kids don't care, their parents don't care. The only thing my co-teachers can tell me is "ignore them" or "you'll get used to it". But, like you, OP, that takes all my strength and totally saps any enjoyment out of the job. Not sure if I'll even make it to summer vacation.

This is also just a rant, basically. But it's at least somewhat comforting to hear that someone else has similar problems. When I describe some of the things that happen at my school to other NETs that I've met, they just get this horrified look on their faces and say "well, I guess I don't feel so bad about my school now.

It's really baffling. Because I had two years of normal kids. Great sometimes, a little naughty at other times. These guys are just animals 8 hours a day (you can bet they don't act like this at home or at hagwon).

This morning one of the kids comes in bawling because his class mates beat the tar out of him, and broke his glasses. I've seen a few one on one donny brooks over the past two years, but never a five on one tarring. Ten minutes before class is due to start, to boot.

Yesterday I walked passed five classes, and every one hooted and hollered my name, as well as god knows what else. I was nearly to the end of the corridor, when one of the kids started screaming my name at the top of his lungs. You can only accept so much, and it was lucky for him he was a good 10 paces away, 'cos if he was any closer I would've laid him out.

Luckily, the time it took to cover the distance to him gave me some time to think about what I was about to do, and I downgraded from red to yellow and instead, grabbed him by the shirt and forcibly put him on the ground outside his class (probably still enough to get me in deep doo-doo).

His teacher gave him a talking to, but god knows what she said.

I'm not going to quit. I'm going to start fresh with them after exams. I've got a spread sheet of rules X classes made up, and will put them in competition with each other. You get point for not acting like lobotomized rhesus monkeys, and the class that wins gets a prize. This along with solid class rules. I'll also explain to my co-teach that, if they're talking, then I'm not talking.

If I hadn't just been through my last day of work yesterday (WOO) and I didn't have a plane ticket out of here in less than two weeks (WOO HOO), if I had, say, another three months left on this, my second contract, I would go to the boss with a letter of resignation in hand and say the following:
Quote:
This job isn't fun anymore. I don't like the way things are. I want to talk about the way things can change, maybe to make it better for me and the customers.

And if he said no, I would tell him I would do everything I could to find him a replacement as soon as possible, so he wouldn't have to pay the recruitment fees, and I'd make every attempt to prorate my severance.

When I told my boss I would not be renewing this contract, he asked me if there was anything he could do to change my mind. I gave him a list of things that his business would need to do, that the hakwon would need to change curriculum, he would need to reschedule his teachers, and basically, do everything entirely my way. So I told him this.
Quote:
In answer to your question, what you meant to ask is "Is there anything feasible I can do?" The answer to that question is no. There is no practical way I can see myself working here after this contract expires.

And that's how and why CBH quit his job in a down economy.

Every fight I've ever seen in this country (whether it be students or drunken adults) has always been a team effort against a single poor sod. I always find myself wondering what stupid crap the guy was trying to pull that would get the others that pissed at him.
