Does anybody know if there are any adult Taekwondo classes in Incheon, preferrably in Geomam or Bupyeong?
Most places I've been to teach children and though they are willing to accomodate an adult, I would feel uncomfortable training with a bunch of kids (not very motivating).
Does anybody here currently go to any TKD classes? Is it essential to understand Korean, or better yet, do your instructors speak English? How would you rate your schools, especially for women (I'm female)?
As it is the national sport, I am only interested in learning TKD. I'm aware of the other great forms of martial arts taught here in South Korea, but I really do just want to learn TKD.
Any help and suggestions would be very much appreciated! |

You can come to classes at my gym in Songdo. 9:00-11:00 evenings.
Adult and foreigner friendly. |

Thanks, riverboy. It sounds good.
Where abouts is Songdo? Do you have a map, or general directions from the nearest train station?
Many women in your classes? |

Classes are usually very small. Rangin from three to four foreign students. We've had a couple of women, but it's quite a workout and people often only last a couple of months. This ends up being a bonus though as I can focus on you directly with the small classes.
The nearest Subway station is Campus Town Station. It's about a five or ten minute walk from there. |

Thanks Riverboy!
Yes, that is one of the many benefits of a small class I will try to check it out on the weekend.
If there are suggestions for any other schools in the Incheon area, please post them! It would be good to check out a range of TKD schools, and I'm sure many people looking to enjoy this Korean martial art will be grateful. |

Naw, most folks on this board like to crap all over taekwondo and talk up other arts. |

I'll attest that the program Riverboy speaks of is well rounded and solid. At least it was for me. I hung for 3 months and a yellow belt. I felt significant improvements in my balance, strength, and focus. What did not work for me was fitting it in with my schedule, which is insane for a dude that does not work. But that had nothing to do with the program. |

An unfortunate truth about some members on this board. All I have been able to find in other discussions are suggestions for other styles and gyms.
Please avoid the urge to debate styles in this discussion and promote gyms for styles other than TKD. A post of various TKD gyms throughout Incheon will be very useful for many people.
It still remains hard to locate a TKD place that holds adult classes and has/welcomes foreign members (Riverboy's gym is seemingly the only one known)! |

hi Riverboy
Is this gym "your" gym, or a gym you go to?
I am probably moving to Songdo in a few months and would be interested in doing this. Do you have morning classes and how much is membership? |

Hi Bish,
It's not 'my' gym, but I run the evening program which are in English. Standard rate for Taekwondo classes across Korea are about 100 buck a month.
Sadly, there are no morning classes. One funny thing about Taekwondo in Korea, is morning classes and adult classes are rare because the market caters to kids. Which is why I think our program is excellent; more suited to adults and practical self defense.
Let me know when you get here. |

I knew this was going to come up. Yeah there are quite a few. Taekwondo is taekwondo, not mixed, but cince you want to change this from in inquiry, to something else... I'l humor you.
Stephan Bonnar, Dan Hardy, Brett Rogers, Bas Rutten and Cung Lee all have extensive backgrounds sin Taekwondo. They learned a few along the way, as have all others. That is why it is called MIXED. |

Hi, I know this thread is from a couple years ago, but I'm wondering pretty much the same question. (if riverboy is still doing the classes in Songdo, that's a little too far away for me, I'm at the opposite end of the city)
Does anyone know of a Tae kwon do dojang in Incheon, preferably near Gye-san (or -yang? I mean the mountain) that runs adult classes?
In addition, I would also be interested in Judo. Not BJJ! I'm talking, classic, grab-a-gi-and-flip-a-mother judo. So if anyone has information in that regard it would be great.
It's so absurd to me, but I seem to live in a martial arts void. Since I can't read signs (or understand them rather) I ask basically everyone I meet, and no one does, or knows anyone who does, any martial art. I *thought* this was ASIA! |
