Anyone know of a site that has a bunch of useful Korean phrases, with romanizations? I just want to be able to communicate simple things. If not, i'm sure there are enough knowledgeable people here to put together a really useful, helpful list. Some categories, school, eating, romance, etc?
I'll start us off:
Thank you
kam samnida
Please take out the meat
kogee baejoo saeyo
Vegetarian

Learn hangeul (the letters) or you will sound like a mental. It will only take a few hours to memorize the whole thing, and will be infinitely more useful than a few garbled phrases. And you will be able to read from the menu which items have meat in them.
And the romanizations you have aren't even correct.* |

I'm not sure if it's still in print or available in book stores here, but I picked up a phrase book called Making Out In Korean a few years back that had tons of useful colloquial language.
In fact, one of the local rags pulls phrases from it word for word, letter for letter for their Korean language mini-column every month. |

You pronounce those 'p' sounds in "kam-sa-haP-ni-da" and "pan-gap-suP-ne-da"? |

Some more...
미안해요 - I'm very sorry.
미안해 - Sorry.
미안 - Lol, sorry.
대답해요 - Please answer.
대답해 - Answer me.
대답해라! - Answer me, damn it! (military order)
빨리해 - Faster..!
빨리해라! - Move your a**! (military order) [not trying to filter dodge, I believe that translation is accurate and don't want any confusion]
조용히 - Quiet, please.
조용! - Quiet!
조용히해라! - I want it quiet right now! (military order)
And on and on with Korean verbs...
This gets creative, in my experience.
닥쳐! - That's shut up, if you want to get into a fight.
입닫아 - Literally, "Close your mouth." That's shut up, and you might get into a fight.
And on and on it goes.
A lot of things you hear around here, like ajosshi, pal nemsenaio, 18, dog baby, things like that...don't curse in Korean until you can get into a cursing match in Korean, or you'll find out how it feels to be on the other end of those kids who yell puck you on the street. |

No, 감사합니다 --> '감사함니다.
The ㅂ assimilates to ㅁ because of the ㄴ, so it's an ㅁ sound. |

This is why romanization sucks. You write it like that and someone who doesn't know any better is going to pronounce the "p" in "hap" 합 when it actually changes its sound because of the ㄴ coming after it. |

I downloaded the book "Making out in Korea", which has tons of useful/functional phrases with the romanization included. Send me a PM with your email and I can send it to you. |
