I don't think it's ebonics, people from the south say it with a draw. I can usually turn my southern draw on and off. Chicks dig it Smile

I didn't know people from the Southen US drew differently.

Mind posting up some pics??

It's definitely redneck speak. Or ghetto. Basically, if you use it, you align yourself with wife-beater wearing slackjawed losers who live off the system and deserve nothing near any respectable status in society. I think the missing "lr" in the expression is nearly equivalent to negative 50 points on any IQ test.

Who the eff are you? It's not redneck or ghetto, it's an accent. We know how to spell the words, we just say them differently. STFU, aiiight?

No sir. I have lived throughout the south long enough to know that it is not the product of an accent.

"Alraght" is from an accent. "Aiight" is incompetence

Sort of like the number of degrees off center a baseball cap is on someone's head (unless he's a baseball catcher)

Gotta say, it sure ain't ghetto, and it sure ain't redneck.

It's probably tied to accent, but "aight" seems to get around, and to go with several regions in the US.

I've trained teachers from all over for the last few years, and have heard aight from southerners and inner city types no more than I've heard it from WASPs and suburbanites from Ohio.

It's just a minor ellision, really common. Absolutely usual that words that don't carry meaning and are used as "verbal pauses" get de-emphasized and shrunk.

I'd draw the line at saying it in class, that''s all.

Best,
justin

I've only just started hearing young punks saying "Aiight" instead of "all right".

Ali G also says "Aiight" but he's poking fun at those who talk like that.

Isn't it such a pain in the rear when you have to correct something like this all because some idiot online thinks he's clever playing on a typo?

It's slang not incompetence. Sometimes people make the choice to play with language for any number of reasons. Criticizing hasn't ever stopped it from happening, and only makes the critical person seem uptight and clueless about the way the universe works.

I use slang, but usually with a posh accent. It's amusing. Word to your mother.
