Gotta say, it sure ain't ghetto, and it sure ain't redneck.
It's probably tied to accent, but "aight" seems to get around, and to go with several regions in the US.
I've trained teachers from all over for the last few years, and have heard aight from southerners and inner city types no more than I've heard it from WASPs and suburbanites from Ohio.
It's just a minor ellision, really common. Absolutely usual that words that don't carry meaning and are used as "verbal pauses" get de-emphasized and shrunk.
I'd draw the line at saying it in class, that''s all.

I've only just started hearing young punks saying "Aiight" instead of "all right".
Ali G also says "Aiight" but he's poking fun at those who talk like that. |

It's slang not incompetence. Sometimes people make the choice to play with language for any number of reasons. Criticizing hasn't ever stopped it from happening, and only makes the critical person seem uptight and clueless about the way the universe works. |
