Ok guys I have been trying to find a job now for over a month. I have taught in Korea for 2 years at 2 middle schools and have good reference from both. I was looking at doing an after school position and came across from recruiter who deals only in after school positions. I can't remember the company but I think its wineducation (or maybe empal) There's a recruiter there called Jacob and I sent him my cv with photo etc twice and have never heard back from him. So I asked my gf to do the same as she is white and said I bet that he'll reply to her. What do you know he responded within 10mins asking of a good interview time. She then asked if he could help me find a job as we have the exact same experience and he said to send my cv again. Still no answer. I have been sending me cv to recruiters leaving out my picture and when they say send a pic I do and thats the last I hear of them. I am from New Zealand and I am light brown, and it's not like I am sending them an offensive picture of myself drunk or anything. So I was wondering can anyone recommend any good recruiters who will deal with non whites.

Ps has anyone dealt with the above recruiter I mentioned?

Cheers[/code]

Well there is sexism and racisim. How do you know it's not just sexism? Schools prefer girls with the storm that blew over that guy who went to Thailand and abused kids.

You might have better luck in Arab Gulf states. If you are a drinker check out The United Arab Emirates or Bakrain. If you don't mind not drinking try Saudi Arabia or Kuwait.

If you decide to stay in Korea you are better off with a Public school position GEPIK hires lots of South Africans.

they have a reputation on here for their racist hiring policies (they definitely don't hire gyopos either) and to be honest it could be a blessing in disguise. Win Education are notorious for scamming teachers (double bank book scam , 11 month firing etc) plus no health/pension. I'd tell your friend to be cautious before signing anything with them.

Just do a search

crepper's right it could actually just be sexism.

Anyway if you'd like to check your theory just bust out photoshop and 'lighten' your appearance (if you take a look at Korean ID's you'll notice they do that with most of their photos) and see if that garners you a more positive response.

That's terrible!

Did you know that even Koreans have their headshots lightened to make them look like they've got the coloring of milk?

This is sneaky but very common practice. My Korean friend was getting a headshot for a new job and they lightened her to alabaster! While there, I decided to have a portrait taken for one of the gifts I was sending my grandparents for the holidays, and they started to lighten my skin and I had to stop them and have them undo the photoshopping. My grandfather is Yemenite, and, while my skin is lighter, due to the mixing that is common in New York mutts, he would have been offended. Sure, they could remove a bit of skin discoloration (red from the cold, a little bit of puffiness under the eyes from lack of sleep), but my skin color is my skin color.

What I recommend is having your photo lightened a tad for work purposes. It's (modedit)y, but you'll probably get a job.

This is one of the things that I hate about this place. Public school is really the only safe bet on getting hired if you're darker skinned. I'm sorry that you have to deal with this crap.

I'm not really that pissed as it's not my home country and I know that I can get a job easily back home no matter that I am brown or a male. I am sure I'll find one but after being here for 2 years I can see why South Korea is not on the map and everybody knows about the likes of China/Japan. I am working with a very good recruiter now from JJ Recruiting (Sarah), so if you ever looking she is a good person to contact.

I know a brown South African employed by a hagwon and a very black American employed by a public school so it's possible. I'd keep trying. How many times have you had to try something more than once or thrice for success?

Ditto this. It sounds ridiculous, but I photoshopped my photo before I applied. I'm of Western European descent, but always get confused for everything from Egyptian to Persian to half-black.

Haha I see wine-ducation too.

Go with a different recruiter mate, i'm a shade off-white too as my mum is of Cypriot origin and I spent most of the ending summer at Piha. Was easy enough to find hogwon work.

I doubt it's because he's a guy. Would a recruiter only recruit women for the spectrum of jobs he is trying to fill? One employer, yes! A recruiter, I don't think so.

that reminds me of the old SNL where a leader of the civil rights movement argues the issue of whites being smarter by correcting it to, "light skinned Blacks are smarter than dark skinned Blacks." Leading Garret Morris, the Eddie Murphy before there was an Eddie, to say, "SAY WHAAT?!?!"

Ahh, good times, good times..... as for whitening, seems like a drastic step.... but given the recovery, seems a reasonable proposition...
