What level are they? Hard to just teach a middle schooler without some starting point.

That's their grade, what LEVEL are they? Beginner, intermediate, advanced? How are you going to teach a student if you don't know their LEVEL of English to start with?

I've got a similar setup with a 3rd-year student at my middle school. He's aspiring to go to a foreign language high school, and I was asked to give him a little extra help for about 15-20 minutes a day.

At first we started with basic conversation (getting-to-know-you type stuff), then moved on to discussing news articles. I printed short articles from The Korean Times online, we discussed them, he took them home to write summaries, etc.

After doing that for a bit, he started bringing in textbooks of idioms and whatnot, and now we're working with those.

Point is, you can do just about anything, but it's likely that he's got some reason/purpose for this one-on-one session, so you'd have to ask him what his goals are and plan around that.

Let me know if you come up with anything brilliant... I could use some new ideas. Good luck.

Good on you for helping the kid. I've helped a few middle school and high school kids with upcoming interviews etc. It's nice to know that you can help them with their goals.

However, my rule is: never teach a kid alone. I always ask that they bring along a friend, and don't forget to keep the door open.

Good luck.

Their English isn't as good as Michael Winner's then. Now we're finding out the details. Very Happy
