http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/opinon/2010/04/137_64808.html Is it just me or is this a really irresponsible opinion? Is calling for the South to go to war with the North really smart? Sure, SK has US backing and the military might to take them out, but NK has hundreds of artillery pieces trained on Seoul. Let those loose and 1000's will die in a flash. Not to mention many 1000's of SKoreans have family in the North and if we did go and oust lil Kim out and take over. What then? Hooray for the Billions (dollars not won) that it will cost to rebuild and reunify.
Just thought I might interject on this. Feel free to disagree. I'm curious on other peoples thoughts on this.

You are right about the conventional artillery trained on Seoul, and due to its proximity to the border there is not much that can be done to stop it in the event the North strikes first. The US and ROK would eventually win out, but that is small comfort for people living in Seoul. I don't see how the writer can say loss of life for South Korea would be minimal.

Not really sure how the south should answer the sinking of the Cheonan, though. One thing for sure, it's pretty tense right now.

We'll be greeted as liberators!

The propaganda machines and politicos are always the ones calling on everyone else to fight and die.

What they're saying may or may not be true, but its stupid to wish for war.

War: old men talking - young men dying.

I'd say whatever family that split during the Korean War are now long forgotten. They don't see each other as family- barely even country men.

What will happen is many will lose their lives, there will be antagonists from China letting loose god knows what kind of biological weapons down on the civilians.

The op-ed is a no-win but I'm not surprised. I am surprised this piece was written by a foreigner. If this country goes to war what will he do? He will go home and sleep in his mom's basement, patting himself on the back while innocent people die.

It is convenient that the writer doesn't live in Seoul.

Yes it probably is. I would say Yeosu or Jeju.

Its also convenient and bizzare that he has left out all talk about the North's nuclear capability. The bit about the size of their armies is also factually incorrect (unless he is adding the US forces to that of the South's): the North's active and reserve ranks are almost double that of the South's.
