Quote:
A man who admitted murdering a South Korean tourist on the West Coast in 2003 was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum non-parole period of 16 years and 3 months in the Christchurch High Court this morning.

Nelson beneficiary Shannon Brett Flewellen was jointly charged with the murder of Jae Hyeon Kim in 2003, along with Hayden Brent McKenzie.

Justice John Fogarty said Flewellen the murder was committed "with a high degree of callousness'' and was clearly a racist killing.

"It was very significant that Mr Kim was Asian. You have white supremacist, neo-Nazi beliefs.

"You regarded him (Kim) as not deserving of the same dignity and respect as a white person.''

In 2008 McKenzie was sentenced to at least 25 years in prison for his involvement with the Kim's murder and also the murder of a homosexual Westport man in 1999.

The police summary of facts states Flewellen, McKenzie and another man picked up Kim at Buller Bridge near Westport while travelling to Runanga.

Kim, a backpacker who was in New Zealand on a tourist visa was thumbing for a lift at the bridge.

Kim set in the rear of the car alongside Flewellen.

McKenzie pulled into a lay-by immediately north of Four Mile River, several kilometres south of Charleston.

He and Flewellen left the car. When they returned McKenzie spun the wheels as to make out the vehicle was stuck before asking the others to get out and push.

While Kim was pushing Flewellen grabbed him from behind, with his right arm around the throat in a choker hold.

Kim struggled to free himself but unable to breathe his arms flailed and he began to convulse.

McKenzie left the car and approached Flewellen telling him ''no blood'' in German.

McKenzie grabbed Kim's wrists and pulled his hands away from Flewellen's forearms.

He held onto his arms and stared into Kim's eyes until he stopped struggling and was dropped to the ground.

Flewellen then stomped on his neck with his heavy boot and stood on his throat to make sure Kim was dead.

He searched the body for money before both Flewellen and McKenzie dragged Kim's body towards the bush but left his backpack.

That night the pair returned the scene of the murder and recovered Kim's clothes and pack.

They burned Kim's pack with his books, clothing, phone, camera and MP3 player as well as the footwear and clothing Flewellen was wearing at the time of the murder.

The next day they returned to the killing scene again, and moved the body to a secret grave.

The price of democracy is that these people have the right to associate etc in NZ. Most Kiwis would call them dog tucker - and they don't expouse their rascist values.

A very small Neo-Nazi White Power movement was a problem in Christchurch a few years ago - but I'd heard that most of them were now in prison. White Power also moved up to the Nelson area - and perhaps that's why there's no Mongrel Mob gangs on the West Coast.

Either way, I hope NZ gets over this gang thing. While I was growing up in NZ we had the 'bikies,' 'V8 Boys', 'Black Power', 'Mongrel Mob,' and now the 'White Power'.

I feel sorry for the Korean guys family. And I also feel sorry for the family of the lovely Japanese girl that was kicked to death 2 doors down from me in Turangi - by a Mongrel Mob prospect trying to earn his Mongrel Mob colors.

A country still growing.

Fifteen years is a slap on the wrist.

They should at least give him a lobotomy.

with early release, in countries like Canada, Australia, n.z., many of these guys end up only actually serving 1/3 of a sentence before they get early release. if you're going to kill someone, or sell drugs, do it in one of these countries.

OP, what exactly was the purpose of recounting the blow-by-blow, minute-to-minute description of the horrendous murder? To feed people's bloodlust?

Well according to the article the judge who sentenced them was John Fogarty. He was part of the Golliwogs back in the 60s. Oh, wait, that was John Fogerty.
