I think it use to be a thousand bucks. Not sure what it is now. If your friend works for this school and finds someone for them, she prob won't get the fee. Unless she negotiates it and has it in writing. |

My recruiter got paid 1,500,000 Won, which is $1,353 USD.
Isn't it insane that recruiters get paid this much?! |

Some get paid an HOURLY PORTION OF YOUR SALARY FOR THE DURATION OF YOUR CONTRACT.
THAT makes me want to be a recruiter. |

I think the average is a little less than that.
But, what, in any way, makes that 'insane'?
I don't get it. |

Well isn't that a lot of money for how much work they do? (They are parasitic middle men and the E-2 regs help this business flourish)
It's kind of like saying that it's insane to think about how much bartenders make in the U.S. For the amount of work they do and the amount of service they are providing, they are definitely overpaid. (both the recruiters and the bartenders) |

Well, unless it's a cartel, it's a function of whatever the market will bear.
Someone who is really smart will undercut the price, and expand revenue and income.
Eventually all markets revert to the level at which supply equals demand. The supply/demand function is different for each recruiter depending on their knowledge, contacts ... in other words, their skill set.
Imagine if there is only one recruiter out there. What kind of fees would he or she charge? The sky is the limit.
What if there were 10,000 recruiters with the same level of skills and every one of them had very deep contacts? Maybe the fees would be something like $200 USD or they would charge 500 KRW/hr worked during the duration of the contract.
Whatever the market will bear. As a prospective teacher, I don't blame the recruiters one bit. My knowledge level has to increase in order to push up my demand function, so I get ripped-off less. |

I remember vaguely a recruiter on here posted the fees (at least his company`s).
SMOE/EPIK pay 900k for public school
Hagwon varies.....teachers have to stick around for 3 months plus before the recruiter gets the money. Typically fees range from 1.3m-1.6m (ish) depending on teacher requirement (ie: Masters in Education, Ivy league etc) |

If you're on an E2, it goes against your visa. |

Recruiters are misleading both the school and applicant about the amount of service they are providing.
In the case of hagwons, they tell the school they are searching far and wide to find the best fit for the school, when in reality they are doing no screening at all, but simply giving the hagwon the first warm body they can find who is willing to say yes and sign. In the case of the applicants, they are not providing useful information about the school, but rather twisting the facts to get them to come over.
It seems like money is being wasted, and that there could be a more efficient way of doing things. |

That is true.
The way it usually works in any economic system is that pricing gets washed out when the system is completely flooded - speculation, supply, whatever.
The pricing mechanism will change if a huge imbalance comes about. So if you want higher quality teachers and recruiters making a smaller cut, you need to have way more recruiters to flood the market.
"Middle men" in most industries get washed out very late in the cycle. That's when a system goes into a "perfect competition" state.
I don't know where we are in the ESL game, but I feel it's still early. |
